Dustin Poirier gave it everything he had, but in the end, it wasn’t enough.
Competing in potentially his final opportunity to claim undisputed UFC gold, Poirier fell short, losing to Islam Makhachev via fifth-round submission in the main event of UFC 302. Poirier now stands at 0-3 in shots at the undisputed UFC lightweight title, having also suffered submission defeats to Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira. Makhachev, on the other hand, moves into a five-way tie for the most consecutive defenses of the UFC lightweight title (3), etching his place among the all-time greats at 155 pounds.
