Anthony Edwards shares what he really thinks about Michael Jordan comparisons in ‘Starting 5’ Netflix documentary

The Minnesota Timberwolves project to be a threat in the Western Conference as long as Anthony Edwards is on the roster.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have a building block in Anthony Edwards. The young guard has proven to be the guy in the city, having already led the club to the Western Conference Finals. Unfortunately, the Timberwolves moved on from Karl-Anthony Towns with a financial motive, but Edwards is every bit of the franchise player they need.

With his emergence, though, speculation and jokes on social media arise regarding Edwards, claiming he’s the son of NBA legend, and arguably the greatest player of all time, Michael Jordan. Any time Edwards has an electric dunk or dynamic finish at the rim, the jokes surface on social media.

Comparions between Edwards and Jordan are constantly made. The Timberwolves superstar doesn’t love the comparison. He revealed such during the show “Starting 5,” a Netflix documentary following five of the NBA’s hottest stars.

It doesn’t seem to be an issue for Edwards, but being compared to a player like Jordan can mount great pressure and expectation. Still, out of respect for Jordan — a six-time NBA Champion and Hall of Fame guard who defined a generation of basketball — Edwards does’t like the comparison.

“I don’t know why everybody compares me to Michael Jordan. I think it’s crazy. I wish it would stop because he’s done so much and I’ve done so little,” Edwards explained.

There’s still plenty for Edwards to accomplish. He’s only ever been as far of the Western Conference Finals, and that came in the recent playoffs. However, when Edwards continues to pile accomplishments, it’ll be for his own legacy, not chasing Jordan.

Being compared to Jordan means Edwards is absolutely doing something right. He’s one of the top players in the entire NBA at the moment. He’s even be called the future face of the league. That’s high praise for Edwards, though he’s more committed to competing at the highest level.

“People say that I’m the future face of the league. It’s cool but I feel like, if you know me, you know that I just want to go out there and compete,” Edwards continued.

Edwards’ focus seems to be in the right place. There’s plenty of narratives and agendas being pushed by fans and media at all times. The Timberwolves superstar and Georgia product only cares to go out on the hardwood and compete, which makes him even greater.

The Timberwolves enter the 2024-25 NBA season with high expectations following a Western Conference Finals appearance. Edwards is at the helm of the franchise and the season results lies on the form at which he enters the season and maintains throughout 82 games.
