NBA analyst explains key difference between Jayson Tatum and Anthony Edwards despite being ‘on the same trajectory’

An NBA analyst has explained one of the key differences between the Boston Celtics’ Jayson Tatum and Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards.

Tatum (26) is three years older than Edwards (23) but they are often compared to eachother, by fans and in the media.

They are viewed as up-and-coming superstars who have the ability to become the ‘face of the league’ once LeBron James, Steph Curry and Kevin Durant retire.

The pair also played together at the Paris 2024 Olympics where USA Basketball won their 20th medal and 27th gold in the men’s competition.

Tatum and Edwards have every right to be confident in their abilities as they are two of the best basketball players in the world.

But while there is no doubt that they believe in themselves immensely, they don’t both show it in the same way.

NBA analyst Renee Montgomery weighed in on this talking point in Netflix’s new documentary, ‘Starting 5’.

“We’ve got Jayson Tatum and we’ve got Anthony Edwards. These are two young superstars. They’re both on the same trajectory,” said Montgomery.

“If you ask Anthony Edwards, he’ll tell you straight up that he’s the best player. If you ask Jayson Tatum, he’s going to think it, he’s going to know it, he might not say it.

“So you have these two completely different superstars, both of them possibly the future face of the league.”

Tatum undoubedtly has the better supporting cast, especially since Karl-Anthony Towns was traded to the New York Knicks.

The reigning champions have Jaylen Brown, Kristaps Porzingis, Jrue Holiday and Derrick White on their roster, as well as Tatum.

However, Edwards does not have a bad team around him by any means. The 23-year-old has two talented big men, Rudy Gobert and Julius Randle, to work with.

The chances are that Edwards puts up better individual numbers, with an increase to 30 points per game certainly within his reach.

But Tatum is likely to be the happier of the two come May as the Celtics are positioned perfectly for another deep playoff run.
