Inter-sports comparisons have always been a fun topic of conversation for fans to discuss their “GOATs” but one NBA player is thinking about making it a reality.
Can a basketball player leave the sport at the peak of his career to make it in another sport, especially as competitive as the NFL?
Is the vice-versa true too? So far, Michael Jordan is the only one who tried to stretch the limits of what is possible as he left the sport at the peak of his powers to try baseball.
Ultimately, he came back and bossed the NBA again in what was the ultimate statement move by a gifted athlete with an unmatched mentality.
It is poetic, then, that the next person who claims that he’s thinking about making a similar move is one who has drawn comparisons to Jordan previously.
Among all the superstars in the NBA today, Anthony Edwards probably stands near the top of the list when it comes to players who speak their minds openly.
In an era of intense media training and Public Relations exercises, Edwards’ candor and jokes set him apart and have made him a fan favorite.
Edwards recently fanned the flames of a potential New York Knicks move through his usual honesty but his recent comment tops everything.
Talking on ESPN Cover Story, the Minnesota Timberwolves superstar, and two-time NBA All-Star claimed that if he wins a ring with the Timberwolves in the next three to four years, he will switch to football.
He said: “I tell my buddies, if I win a ring in the next 3-4 years, I’m going to play football.”
It is not the first time Edwards has expressed a desire to try his hand in the NFL. He did something similar last November when he said he wanted to be the first player to play in both the NBA and the NFL.
It is sometimes difficult to understand what Edwards is saying seriously and when he is just giving a soundbite that he knows will bring him attention.
In this case, it might be a combination of both since his appreciation for the NFL is well-known and he has said earlier that he wants to “figure that out” but only once his team wins the championship.
Edwards has been a sporting prodigy all his life so the chances of him standing up on his own two feet in the NFL are higher than they would be for many but playing professionally after being out of practice and playing another sport entirely is a tall order.
Having said that, it is not beyond the realms of imagination that he does try his hand at the sport at the end of his current contract, expiring in 2028/29.
He will only be 28 at the time and theoretically, at the peak of his athletic powers but it might require a decision from him since trying his hand in the NFL properly and coming back might have him on the wrong side of 30 by then.
Still, if there’s one player who you can bet on making that sort of audacious decision, it’s Anthony Edwards.
