Kendrick Perkins eviscerates LA Lakers star for ‘slap in the face’ defensive performance in Grizzlies loss

The Los Angeles Lakers’ hot start to the season has evaporated, now sitting at .500 win percentage.

After going 3-0, the LA Lakers are now 4-4. The latest performance was a 131-114 loss to the Ja Morant inspired Memphis Grizzlies.

Anthony Davis’ injury led him to miss the game, and there is not enough support behind LeBron James without him.

Coach JJ Redick was not happy after the game and walked out of a press conference when pressed about his stars.

D’Angelo Russell is in his second spell on the Los Angeles Lakers, and patience may be wearing thin with his performances.

Speaking after the Lakers’ loss to the Detroit Pistons, Kendrick Perkins criticised D’Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves for their lack of defensive effort.

And following the defeat to the Grizzlies, Perkins doubled down and eviscerated Russell’s defensive effort.

He said: “This is a slap in the face to the coaching staff when a guy plays basketball like this. This possession right here, lackadaisical, ‘I don’t care’.”

In reference to his coach’s building frustrations, Perkins added: “After this JJ Redick said I’ve seen enough you’ve got to come sit on the sideline with me D-Lo.”

There is some respite for the Lakers when they face a team in even more trouble, the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Sixers are last in the Eastern Conference at 1.43, with an embarrassing 1-6 record.

They will also be without Joel Embiid, who is suspended, after an altercation with a reporter in the locker room, which has become one of the big dramas early in the season.

The Lakers could be playing them at the perfect time, and despite their own troubles, they could tip their record back into the winning column.
