With his current contract set to expire at the end of the season, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has rejected the initial offer of a new deal from the club, according to Football Insider.
However, there is a strong desire from both the player and the club to reach an agreement, and for the Dutch defender to continue his long and fruitful spell at Anfield.
Ever since his arrival from Southampton in January 2018, Van Dijk has been the main pillar of Liverpool’s defence, and at the age of 33, his influence in the team under Arne Slot remains as great as it ever was under Jurgen Klopp. This season, he started every game the Reds have played in the Premier League and the Champions League so far, finishing all of them on the pitch as well to make a total of 20 appearances. He has scored once in each competition, against AC Milan in the Champions League and against Arsenal in the Premier League.
