Mike Brown blasts Sacramento Kings display, pinpoints key ‘middle school’ errors

The Sacramento Kings continued their run of poor displays and it’s safe to say coach Mike Brown was left less than impressed.

Brown’s side went down 113-100 to a struggling Lakers, the defeat followed a narrow 129-130 loss to the Denver Nuggets.

The latest poor result sees the team fall to twelfth in the Western Conference with a 13-15 record.

Before the game coach Brown called for star played De’Aaron Fox to ‘step up’, it remains to be seen whether his team-leading 26 points against the Lakers achieved that.

In a game that saw LeBron James break yet another NBA record the Kings coach was much more preoccupied by his side’s ‘middle school’ errors.

There is no doubt that Kings coach Brown is one of the most honest and open coaches in the league and he lived up to this reputation following the side’s latest defeat.

While the team’s all-around performance was pulled apart by the coach there was one key area that bothered him more than others.

Speaking to the media, he said: “One of the things we keep doing is we keep trying to throw Domis [Domantas Sabonis] the ball when a small guy is on him and we keep throwing him a bounce pass and I keep telling the guys ‘if Domis has a small guy on him you can’t throw a bounce pass’, Domis has got to ask for the ball away from the small guy and you gotta throw it up to his hand.

“Not only is a bounce pass slower but it also brings it down to the level so that the little guy can get it yet we keep doing it time and time again.”

The coach went on to explain a simple game mechanic that is taught in ‘middle school’ that the team are not doing.

He said: “You get taught this in middle school, if I see a switch and I see Domis has a guy sealing him and I’m at the top of the floor I’m gonna throw it to Tony on the wing so Toney has a better angle to throw it to Donis at the post. Between unforced turnovers and trying to feed Domis at the post with bounce passes or from the top of the floor, it resulted in them [LA Lakers] shooting 40% from the floor but still scoring 113 points.”

Results and performance are the keys to success in any job, but especially at the highest level in sports, and the Kings haven’t been putting in performances as of late.

When a team is struggling pressure is instantly put on the coach, as Lakers JJ Redick recently found out.

With the Kings struggling in the Western Conference and currently on a two-game losing streak, some have begun to question Brown’s long-term future.

Former NBA star Kendrick Perkins took to Twitter to express his concerns.

He said: “Mike Brown better start winning some games. The seat starting to warm up a bit.”

Brown will be looking for a reaction from his side as they get a chance at redemption against the Lakers in their next game.
