D’Angelo Russell explains why he’s ‘grateful’ LA Lakers traded him to Brooklyn Nets

D’Angelo Russell made his return to the Brooklyn Nets, and is ready to get started.

It is almost a week since the LA Lakers and Brooklyn Nets agreed a four-player trade, which saw D’Angelo Russell make his return to Brooklyn.

Russell was previously traded to the Nets by the Lakers way back in 2017.

Just two years after being drafted by the Lakers, being traded away the first time was a shock to the system for the second overall pick. Less so this time.

D’Angelo Russell will have heard his name being floated around in trade rumors for months, and it felt inevitable after he was dropped from the Lakers’ starting unit.

He was reported to be optimistic about his return to the Nets, and now speaking to the New York Post, he says he is happy he is back in Brooklyn, making the transition a lot easier.

Russell said: “It’s a good feeling, honestly, to go back somewhere you’re comfortable, somewhere you know the ins and outs a little bit. See some familiar faces.

“It kind of makes the process a little easier to adjust to. So I’m just grateful for that.”

On a personal level, being traded is one of the hardest things for a NBA player to adjust to, learning a new city, where to live, where to eat, and so on, and Russell could have been traded anywhere. Going back to his former team takes a lot of that hardship out.

D’Angelo Russell’s exit from the LA Lakers elicited an angry response from former teammate Nick Young, who he infamously fell out with. Young blasted ‘Stay out of LA’, deciding now was the time to re-ignite their feud.

But staying out of Los Angeles won’t be easy for D’Angelo Russell, he is due to return later this month.

The Lakers host the Nets on January 18, a game in which Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton will be facing their former team too.
