Brian Windhorst names 76ers star having ‘terrible year’ as lucky escape for Golden State Warriors

The Golden State Warriors are on a miserable free fall right now.

After igniting the season on a promising start, things have suddenly turned opposite for the Golden State Warriors at this stage of the year. They are now outside of the Western Conference’s competitive field as the 12th seed with a horrible 19-20 record.

Their Monday loss against the Toronto Raptors — a rebuilding, cellar-dweller team in the NBA right now — offered yet another rock-bottom experience for them amid ongoing downside.

Following their loss against the Raptors, Stephen Curry went viral for offering cryptic remarks about what should Golden State do to address their worsening situation.

As their struggles continue, trades are likely about to happen within Golden State in order to save their season. But Curry made it known that he’s against desperate moves that could ruin the franchise’s long-term look.

Brian Windhorst argued that it was simply a captivating statement from Curry, showcasing selflessness and primary commitment to the welfare of the Warriors. From this, the ESPN expert also indicated that out of Curry’s remarks, the Dubs dodged a bullet by not going after Paul George last offseason.

“What if they had gotten Paul George? Paul George having a terrible year. Now I don’t know if it would have been the same if he was in Golden State, but on the other hand, like, what if they had gotten Paul George and they had given up those assets for him, and this was happening,” Windhorst said.

“So I think there’s two sides here. Steph, trying to be realistic.”

It has been well known that the Warriors emerged as one of the key suitors for George last summer. Per reports, the Dubs made a major lucrative package to the Los Angeles Clippers and were prepared to give the star swingman the max contract he seeks should a deal happen.

Yet eventually, George opted out of his 2024-25 player option and entered free agency in which the Philadelphia 76ers gained his service, signing the future Hall of Famer to a staggering four-year deal worth $211 million.

Fast forward after six months, the 76ers’ huge commitment to George remains yet to materialize. The new 76ers star has been awful this year, averaging 16.8 points in 42.1 percent shooting. His constant absences have contributed to Philadelphia’s demise this year amid hype and expectations as the team occupies the 11th spot of the East with a 15-23 record.

Adding George and absorbing the similar circumstance that he has right now in Philly, it’ll be hard to imagine the lowly impression that both Curry and Golden State will feel.

With several assets available, the Dubs are steadfast in giving Curry the second co-star he needs following the departure of Klay Thompson. Witnessing what has been happening around Philadelphia upon the massive signing of George, they can only be more mindful in identifying the best talent they can attain to improve their odds of competing.
