New York Knicks interested in dramatic move for Karl-Anthony Towns’ former head coach to replace Tom Thibodeau

The New York Knicks’ coaching job has taken another new twist.

Following the team’s exit interviews, the New York Knicks announced in a statement they would be parting ways with Tom Thibodeau.

The decision has split opinion – as it should considering Thibodeau’s impressive record during his tenure with the Knicks, recently leading them to the Eastern Conference Finals.

But what comes next has sparked an even wider array of views – who should be the New York Knicks‘ next head coach?

There is extra intrigue because the Knicks are considering coaches already in jobs in the NBA.

The New York Knicks‘ initial four-man shortlist included Houston Rockets’ head coach Ime Udoka – who is Stephen A. Smith’s first choice for the job.

But the Rockets do not intend to allow Udoka to leave.

Another man on the list is the Dallas Mavericks’ coach Jason Kidd, and while they want to keep him, ESPN insider Tim MacMahon refuses to rule it out.

Now according to SNY, the Knicks have added Minnesota Timberwolves‘ head coach Chris Finch to their shortlist.

Finch’s Timberwolves have reached the Western Conference Finals in the past two seasons. He was appointed by the team in 2021.

He faces another tough challenge in the competitive West, and it’s possible moving East may appeal.

The most intriguing part of Chris Finch swapping Minnesota for New York would be a reunion with Karl-Anthony Towns.

Finch coached Towns to the Western Conference Finals in 2024. But last summer he was traded to the Knicks for cost reasons. Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo went the other way.

Towns has been mentioned in trade rumors since the team’s exit. But if the Knicks moved for Finch, it would make sense to keep Towns exactly where he is.
