Tim MacMahon comments on ‘feasible scenario’ that could emerge at Dallas Mavericks resulting from Jason Kidd rumors

Tim MacMahon has made an interesting point about Jason Kidd leaving the Dallas Mavericks head coaching job to join the New York Knicks.

The Knicks relieved their head coach Tom Thibodeau after losing in the Eastern Conference Finals to the Indiana Pacers.

Gary Payton was not pleased with the firing and asked the players to be blamed for the loss in the Finals.

Since the news of his firing came out, a few top names have been linked with the New York Knicks job.

Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd is also one of them.

However, ESPN’s Tim MacMahon has made an interesting point about Kidd not wanting to leave the Mavericks.

Kidd has been a coach with the Mavericks since 2021 and helped them reach several deep playoff runs.

He helped develop the talented Luka Doncic into one of the best point guards in the NBA and also made the Mavericks a formidable playoff team, although this season was more difficult.

Reports suggested that the Knicks had approached the Mavericks to speak to Kidd about the coaching position.

But MacMahon believes with Cooper Flagg coming in, it is unlikely the former NBA player would want to leave the organisation.

“I don’t think J-Kid wants to leave the Mavericks, but that doesn’t mean he is not interested in the Knicks job,” said MacMahon.

He also added: “I don’t think J-Kid wants to get the hell out of Dallas, especially honestly with Cooper Flagg coming in.”

Kidd signed a multi-year deal with the Mavericks only last year, making it even more difficult for the Knicks to onboard him.

“I don’t want to put odds on anything here, but certainly one very feasible scenario here is J-Kid ends up with a restructured extended extension,” said the ESPN analyst.

Kidd’s ascent into becoming a top coach in the NBA was there for everyone to see since the time he was with the Brooklyn Nets.

He was also an assistant coach on the LA Lakers championship team in 2020.

Since joining the Mavericks, Kidd has done a phenomenal job, leading the team to multiple 50 win seasons, which also included a trip to the NBA Finals.

Although the 2024-25 season was a disappointing one for the team from Dallas, they had multiple injuries and their team was shaken up by the trade.

They were given a boost after winning the number one pick, where the Mavs are expected to pick Cooper Flagg.

General Manager Nico Harrison has come under a lot of criticism for trading away Doncic, but the Mavs have a roster capable of competing for a championship next season with all their stars back from injuries.

Flagg has shown the world what he is capable of doing, earning praise from some current NBA players as well.

If Kidd stays with the Mavs, they can contend for a championship and while the Knicks also offer the possibility of doing that, as a former player of the organisation, he is loved and respected in Dallas, and the team will do their best to keep him as their coach.
