The Boston Celtics failed to defend their NBA Championship in 2025 and are now planning the exit of an All-Star.
During the Celtics series loss against the New York Knicks, superstar Jayson Tatum suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon injury, which will likely keep him out for the majority of the 2025-26 NBA season.
Combine that with the fact a new ownership group will soon take over the Celtics, it’s clear that the organization is expected to make major moves during the offseason. One of them is finding a new team for Jrue Holiday.
Despite winning the NBA Championship in 2024, the C’s are reportedly considering breaking up their current roster.
It will likely include parting ways with the likes of Kristaps Porzingis, Jrue Holiday, and Al Horford. Speaking of Holiday, the Celtics have seemingly taken the first step towards bidding farewell to him.
The Celtics are already listening to offers for the talented guard, according to renowned NBA insider Jake Fischer via The Stein Line.
Considering the Celtics seemed to have a long-term plan for Holiday after signing him to a four-year, $134.4 million contract extension in April 2024, it’s a surprising decision to listen to trade offers for him.
However, the biggest factor leading to it must be the 2x NBA All-Star’s age. Holiday will turn 35 soon and will be just two years shy of 40 when his current deal expires.
There’s no doubt that Holiday played a crucial role in the Celtics winning the 2024 NBA Championship. However, according to data provided by Sofascore, Holiday showed signs of a slight decline this season.

He averaged a combined 10.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game in the regular season and the 2025 playoffs. The 2x NBA champ also shot 45% from the field, including 35% from the three-point line.
Being a defense-first guard, Holiday isn’t expected to put up incredible numbers in the box score, but the Celtics still expect better from him.
After all, this was the first time in the last five seasons that Holiday averaged less than 10.0 points per game in the playoffs, scoring 7.7.
In any case, it will be interesting to see if the Celtics indeed trade Holiday after just two years of partnership. The Brooklyn Nets have been tipped to be one destination to keep in mind for Jrue.
Former NBA guard Theo Pinson suggested this move as a way to reunite Holiday with Giannis Antetokounmpo in Brooklyn.
