Guehi could stay put and run down Crystal Palace contract

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi is reportedly a target for several top clubs in England, but according to the Guardian, there is a chance that he could remain at Selhurst Park next season and play down the final year of contract with the Eagles.

Newcastle tried to sign Guehi last summer but were put off by the demanded price of £70million. Now, however, with just 12 months remaining on his contract, the price is expected to come down. Liverpool have also entered the race for the services of the England defender, as have Tottenham Hotspur.

A chance to join the Premier League champions would obviously be hard to turn down, but the centre-back who turns 25 next month would want regular game time in a season preceding the World Cup, with the aim of making the England squad at the tournament next year. That would hardly be a certainty at Liverpool, given the presence of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, even if Jarell Quansah leaves as is looking likely at the moment. This is where Spurs may see their chance, especially if they sell Cristian Romero who is a reported target for Atletico Madrid.

Palace will want to avoid losing Guehi for free next summer, but for the time being, that scenario remains a concrete possibility.
