Shocking body cam video released of alleged Jon Jones crash scene investigation

A new body cam video from the Albuquerque Police Department has been released that includes Jon Jones’ voice on a phone call.

On Saturday, MMA Fighting confirmed a report from the Albuquerque Journal that Jones was charged on June 17 for leaving the scene of an accident (no great bodily harm or death). The misdemeanor charge stems from an incident on Feb. 24.

The Albuquerque Journal obtained body cam footage from the scene following the accident, which you can watch in the video above.

The edited video shows a women handing her cell phone to a police officer. A man’s voice is heard on the other line as the officer on scene asks the individual to identify himself. The woman says “he was the one driving the vehicle,” before telling the officer “that’s Jon Jones” on the phone.

The man on the phone, who is alleged to be Jones, is slurring his words and appears intoxicated, leading to the officer to call for backup after the man “made statements implying his capacity to employ lethal force through third parties,” which was stated in documents obtained in regard to the incident.

The individual is also heard in the video saying, “My brothers: They kill people for way less.” As the video continues, the man — who the body cam officer confidently says is Jones to another officer — is speaking to the woman in the passenger seat, that says she owns the card. The woman is visibly upset, responding to the caller with, “I don’t know what the f*ck you’re talking about, my car is wrecked,” before telling the second officer that the driver was Jones.

On Monday, Jones’ attorney released a statement to MMA Fighting saying he’s “stunned” that the Albuquerque Police Department charged Jones in the case.

Prior to the incident becoming public, UFC CEO Dana White revealed that Jones notified the promotion of his retirement, and that he is no longer the UFC heavyweight champion. Tom Aspinall was also promoted from interim to undisputed champion.

Jones’ next court hearing is July 24.
