Kyrie Irving faces a M per year setback as he signs a three-year contract extension with Dallas Mavericks

Kyrie Irving has officially re-signed with the Dallas Mavericks on a long-term deal.

The Dallas Mavericks and Kyrie Irving have reached an agreement over a three-year, $119 million contract extension.

Irving declined his $43 million player option for the 2025-26 season to sign this new deal, which could potentially keep him in Dallas until the summer of 2028.

Season Average Annual Value
2025-26 $39.6 million
2026-27 $39.6 million
2027-28 (Player Option) $39.6 million

Kyrie will make an average of $39.6 million per year with this contract. While that’s great money, Irving’s torn ACL injury has reportedly cost him nearly $20 million annually.

Irving is coming on the heels of a season in which he averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game before going down with the injury.

Despite being in his 30s, these numbers were reportedly good enough for Kai to command a contract extension that could have helped him earn up to $60 million annually.

“Rival executives believed Irving, a nine-time All-Star, was in line for a major payday — between $50 million and $60 million annually — before the injury,” Shams Charania of ESPN reported.

Considering Irving may never return to the player he once was, the Mavericks could have suffered a huge financial setback if they had given the 2016 NBA champion that contract.

Irving is currently in recovery from his torn ACL injury, but it didn’t stop him from sharing his short reaction to the news of his return to Dallas.

While Kyrie will likely be sidelined until the middle of the 2025-26 NBA season, his presence in the locker room will certainly help the Mavericks.

Moreover, Irving has already taken a liking to the Mavs’ projected No. 1 overall pick, Cooper Flagg. It will be interesting to see how Flagg and co. hold the fort until the veteran guard returns to action.
