Alcaraz allays injury fears, says he will defend Indian Wells crown

Carlos Alcaraz expects to recover from injury within “a few days” and to defend his Indian Wells title in March.

The world No. 2 after rolling his ankle at the start of his opening tie against Thiago Monteiro.

Alcaraz took to social media on Wednesday night to reassure his fans that he expects to recover soon after having a scan.

“I just had an MRI on my ankle after yesterday’s injury, and I have a grade 2 lateral sprain that will keep me out of action for a few days,” Alcaraz wrote.

“See you in Las Vegas and Indian Wells!”

Alcaraz suffered the injury during just the second point of his match with Monteiro, forcing his retirement.

But the 20-year-old seemed to confirm he will bounce back in time for the ‘Sunshine Swing’ in March, featuring two of the biggest ATP Masters 1000 events of the season at Indian Wells and Miami.

Alcaraz claimed the Indian Wells title last year, knocking out Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals before downing Daniil Medvedev in the final.

It was one of six titles the youngster claimed in his most successful season yet, which also featured his second Grand Slam win at Wimbledon last summer.

However, the 2024 season has got off to a slow start by his high standards.
