ALCARAZ 6-1 2-3 GRIEKSPOOR
Alcaraz attempts to up the ante on the return and after dusting himself down following a near miss with a crosscourt pass he presses to deuce with a scorcher of a forehand down the line.
Griekspoor again deploys a foray to the net tactic to great effect, but Carlos keeps him twitching with a devilish dropper.
The No.2 seed can’t quite carve his way to a break point, however, and Tallon stays ahead with a touch of finesse at the net following two humongous forehands to each corner.
ALCARAZ AND GRIEKSPOOR WILL ALSO MEET IN THE DOUBLES ON TUESDAY
The men’s doubles clash between Spain and Netherlands is third up on Lenglen.
ALCARAZ 6-1 2-2 GRIEKSPOOR
An ace and a drive volley that’s too hot too handle are the pick of Alcaraz’s points before a clever body serve rubber stamps a hold to 15 that squares the set.
ALCARAZ 6-1 1-2 GRIEKSPOOR
This is more like it from Tallon.
He may make a real meal of two overheads but Alcaraz lobs long on the second and the Dutch underdog keeps pushing the board with a hold to 15 early in Set 2.
ALCARAZ 6-1 1-1 GRIEKSPOOR
It’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it hold to 15 from Carlos as he shrugs off a double fault to ease on to the board with a crushing forehand down the line.
ALCARAZ 6-1 0-1 GRIEKSPOOR
Tallon gratefully accepts a forehand donation into the net to edge in front from 30-30 but then returns the favour with a woeful, serve-and-volley fail.
Alcaraz shanks a ‘Home-Run forehand’ off the island to allow the Dutchman to edge in front from deuce and a timely, wide serve earns him the scoreboard advantage when it doesn’t come back.
SET! – ALCARAZ 6-1 GRIEKSPOOR
Carlitos comfortably serves out the opener to 15, producing a delicious crosscourt lob that’s too good to get back on the first of two set points, to gobble down the evening breadstick.
It was scintillating from the Spaniard at the start, but it hasn’t needed to be late in Set 1 as the Dutchman’s level nose-dived.
BREAK! – ALCARAZ 5-1 GRIEKSPOOR
That will end Tallon’s slim hopes of a comeback in this set.
He compounds an error-strewn game with a double fault on a second BP – his second DF of the game – to hand over the insurance break.
ALCARAZ 4-1 GRIEKSPOOR
It’s not the perfect service game, but nor is it a return game Tallon will remember too fondly.
Alcaraz sweeps away a 1-2 punch to seal the deal to 30 after a S+V fail had briefly opened the door for the Dutchman.
ALCARAZ 3-1 GRIEKSPOOR
Tallon has made a decent start here.
He’s just been on the end of some bewitching tennis from the four-time major winner, who also has a knack for producing the goods in the key moments.
This time the Dutchman keeps the No.2 seed at arm’s length, firing down first serves to ease on to the board with a game to 15.
ALCARAZ 3-0 GRIEKSPOOR
Alcaraz seems to rally well to avert danger when a drive volley sizzles long and leaves him up against it at 0-30.
The Spaniard turns the tables with a 1-2 punch, a brutal crosscourt forehand and a decent bounce smash following some ridiculous agility to dig out a defensive lob.
Tallon responds with a clear intention to hit big off the forehand and get to the net. It works twice in quick succession to earn him a break back point, but Carlitos is having none of it and slams down a trio of clutch first serves to wriggle out a dodge and consolidate.

BREAK! – ALCARAZ 2-0 GRIEKSPOOR
Alcaraz works Tallon over in his forehand corner with a barrage of crosscourt heat-seekers before changing direction to perfectly arrow a forehand winner down the line.
It cranks up the heat at 15-30 and despite conjuring up a clutch serve, Griekspoor can’t live with the No.2 seed’s constant probing.
The Dutch hopeful buckles on the first break point of the match with a skewed response into the net and the Spaniard seizes control of the proceedings immediately.
ALCARAZ 1-0 GRIEKSPOOR
Carlitos opens with an ace and a rocket of a forehand down the line.
Tallon pockets a gift when the Spaniard’s backhand dumps into the net but then the Dutchman flashes long off the same wing as he looks to be bold and aggressive from the baseline.
Alcaraz quickly concludes the game with an emphatic forehand winner down the line and already looks firmly in his groove.
READY? … PLAY!
Alcaraz will serve first.
