The 2024/25 NBA season is still in pre-season but that hasn’t stopped the players from getting in on the rumour mill action.
Anthony Edwards is the latest one as his Minnesota Timberwolves played the New York Knicks in a game that was special for a reason.
It was the first time Karl-Anthony Towns came up against his old team after the blockbuster trade that send shockwaves across the NBA landscape.
Both Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns showed as Knicks emerged victorious 115-110. Towns finished with a dominating double-double, as he scored 16 and had 16 rebounds.
Edwards was the Timberwolves’ top scorer with 31 points and his usual array of flashy, highlight reel-worthy moments that the fans in Minnesota have gotten used to.
However, they might have to start counting down the time on their superstar’s stay on the team…
As this was the first time Edwards was reunited with his former teammate Towns since the trade, the two engaged in a jersey swap.
The Timberwolves posted a video of the incident, which was a heartfelt moment between two players who respect and admire each other.
However, Timberwolves’ eagle-eyed fans spotted something unusual during the interaction, which was Edwards’ response to a fan.
A Knicks fan shouted at Edwards that once his current contract is up, he should be headed for New York [Knicks]: “Once that contract is up… New York, baby, New York.”
Edwards, instead of laughing it off or not responding, chose to actively engage and fan the flames of the rumor mill with a seven-word response.
He said: “I definitely would love to be reunited,”, in the context of his reunion with Karl-Anthony Towns at potentially, the New York Knicks.
The Madison Square Garden has long been a mecca for professional athletes and Edwards has also had some memorable games against the Knicks.
Having said that, Edwards signed a five-year, supermax extension with the Timberwolves in July last year that ties him to the team through the 2028/29 season.
Of course, much can happen in five years and if Edwards makes his mind up, the Timberwolves won’t be short of suitors for him even before the expiry of his contract.
He would theoretically be in his peak years at the end of his contract so there will be no worries about a potential decline and for a showman like Edwards, the charm of the big stage will always be present.
It might just have been a passing remark by Edwards but the fans are unlikely to take it that way, especially as the fit just makes so much sense.
The Towns trade shook the fans as a fan favorite was let go in unexpected circumstances. It is fair to assume there will be borderline mutiny if Edwards follows him!
