The Boston Celtics were relieved to welcome back star Jayson Tatum to their side following their recent two-game slump, he made an instant impact.
MVP candidate Tatum was pulled from the recent game against the Philadelphia 76ers through illness, his absence was felt in the 114-118 defeat.
The team were back to winning ways for Tatum’s return as they put up 142 points in a demolition of the Indiana Pacers who ended up going down 142-105.
Jaylen Brown revealed his wider impact on the team when Tatum isn’t available. Despite the five-time NBA All-Star’s return Brown still top-scored with an eye-catching 44-point display.
The all-round effort of Payton Pritchard did not go unnoticed either as Brown admitted after the game that the team are all working towards one goal for the 26-year-old.
It is extremely hard for most players to break into what is a star-studded Celtics side, which includes the likes of Tatum, Brown, Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday to name a few.
This is exactly the challenge that Pritchard faces, but he has not let his rotation role lessen his impact on the side.
Pritchard is averaging an impressive 15.4 points per game alongside 3.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists, not bad for someone who doesn’t regularly start.
NBA expert Chris Mannix recently rubbished suggestions that the Celtics could trade Pritchard for Jimmy Butler. This highlights his value to the team.
The guard dropped 18 points, eight rebounds and 10 assists in the victory over the Pacers and Brown told reporters after the game how the side are trying to get Pritchard to get Sixth Man of the Year.
He said: “I think we’re only as strong as each link, so it’s about empowering guys and continuing to create play. It would mean a lot for the team to get Payton, to help him get Sixth Man of the Year.”
It’s hard for some players to remain level-headed when praise is coming their way but now in his fifth NBA season, Pritchard is conducting himself with the experience of a veteran.
The Sixth Man of the Year award is given to the player who performs best for their team coming off the bench as a substitute, a role that Pritchard certainly completes.
He would join former teammate Malcolm Brogdon in winning the award if he gets his hand on it this season.
Previous winners:
- 2024: Naz Reid – Minnesota Timberwolves
- 2023: Malcolm Brogdon – Boston Celtics
- 2022: Tyler Herro – Miami Heat
- 2021: Jordan Clarkson – Utah Jazz
- 2020: Montrezl Harrell – LA Clippers
While Pritchard will be hoping to get a spot in the starting lineup one day he is certainly still having a wide impact on the team from the bench. He is certainly valued by his teammates.
