Boston Celtics president Rich Gotham says what he has ‘always appreciated’ about Jaylen Brown

Jaylen Brown is expected to take on the role of the primary star for the Boston Celtics next season.

After all, Jayson Tatum is expected to miss the majority of the 2025-26 NBA season due to a torn Achilles tendon.

Although Jaylen Brown also went through surgery in the offseason, he’s expected to make a full recovery and be available for the Boston Celtics to start the campaign.

Keeping that in mind, Celtics president Rich Gotham has a special task for Brown for the upcoming season.

With the likes of Jrue Holiday, Al Horford, and Kristaps Porzingis no longer on the roster, the Celtics are certainly in need of someone to stand up as a leader for the franchise.

Well, president Gotham expects Brown to be that player for the C’s during the 2025-26 season.

“It’s important for all the players to be a leader in whatever role you’re in. And JB is an inspirational leader for the team. He has been.

“I think he’s the vet. I think that other players will look to him to set a tone,” Gotham said via CLNS Media Boston Sports Network.

He added: “The thing I always appreciate about JB is he’s got a nice, healthy chip on his shoulder.”

It seems that the upcoming season will be extremely crucial for Brown. After all, everyone expects Brown to rise to Tatum’s level for the team to succeed.

While it’s good that Brown has a chip on his shoulder, it’s not entirely enough to lead the team to glory. Gotham explained what Brown needs to do to achieve that.

“If he looks into the season and says, ‘I’m going to take it upon myself to help this team win and do what it takes,’ we’re looking forward to that,” Gotham stated.

At the end of the day, a player can only be as good as a head coach allows him to be. Keeping that in mind, Gotham shared a short yet much-needed statement on head coach Joe Mazzulla.

“Joe [Mazzulla] does an amazing job with the players, individually and collectively,” Gotham concluded.

The Celtics finished last season as the second seed in the Eastern Conference with a 61-21 record. Can Mazzulla and co. repeat the same level of success? Only time will tell.
