Rasmus Hojlund’s future at Manchester United continues to be shrouded in mystery.
The impending signing of Benjamin Sesko is a clear indication that Ruben Amorim is far from happy with his central attacking options.
In the Portuguese head coach’s defence, the numbers hardly offer any defence for United’s 22-year-old sharpshooter.
The Dane registered only 10 goals in 52 games (in all competitions), at a rate of one goal every 332.2 minutes.
Erik ten Hag doesn’t want to sign Rasmus Hojlund for Leverkusen
It’s not exactly looking like a promising situation for the summer 2023 signing.
Hojlund’s former boss, Ten Hag, apparently doesn’t want him over in the Bundesliga. As Christian Falk reports, the Dutchman considers Patrik Schick his ‘number one striker’ ahead of the new campaign.
“Patrik Schick has extended his contract with Leverkusen this week until 2030,” the Bundesliga insider exclusively informed CaughtOffside.
“Head coach Ten Hag is counting on Schick as his number one striker – that’s what the Dutchman has promised the forward. On that basis, there’s no room for Højlund.”
That complicates things for the United star – not least of all for his club.
How exactly will the Red Devils manage to move on their troublesome No.9? Never mind recoup anything close to the £72m fee handed over to Atalanta.
Does Benjamin Sesko arrival at Man Utd spell the end for Hojlund?
There’s a world in which Ruben Amorim also looks to keep hold of the Denmark international as backup for his new striker signing.
As part of the reality, there’s a developing scenario that might actually quite suit Rasmus Hojlund, provided he still believes his future lies at Old Trafford.
After all, Benjamin Sesko’s arrival should, theoretically, lower the pressure and expectation levels that have evidently factored into his inconsistent performances.
United, in turn, get what appears to be an instant upgrade to the heart of their attack. On that point, Falk spoke in glowing terms about what Sesko could bring to the Premier League: “Benjamin Sesko’s teammates at Leipzig rate him very, very highly; they say he’s even better than Erling Haaland. Notably, both played together in Salzburg, having signed for the Austrian Red Bull subsidiary in 2019.
“At 22 years old, he’s very young, he has great technical ability, and he’s fast. He showcased several impressive attributes during a 3-3 draw with Bayern Munich in May this year when he lobbed Jonas Urbig in the opening 11 minutes!”
Only time will tell whether the Slovenian also succumbs to the poisoned chalice that is the No.9 slot at Manchester United.
