The Dallas Mavericks are in freefall and are likely to need a big swing to try and turn their fortunes around.
A disastrous month for the Dallas Mavericks has prompted warnings the team could slip out of contention for the rest of the decade.
Trading away Luka Doncic and shortening their championship window has prompted heavy criticism from analysts and fans, with Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving both sustaining injuries.
Irving has a torn ACL and will miss part of the 2025-26 season, making it a desperate scenario for the Mavs.
One former player has urged the team to do ‘whatever it takes‘ to acquire Kevin Durant in the off-season.
Ahead of the Phoenix Suns game at the Dallas Mavericks, Kevin Durant was among the visiting stars to warm up.
And while he did so, Mavs GM Nico Harrison was spotted pacing the sidelines, ahead of the Suns’ win.
Was he just making his presence felt, subtly letting Durant know he was watching? The Mavs are likely to be in the mix for his services this summer.
Fans had plenty to say after seeing the clip of Harrison near to KD, with a range of responses.
One wrote: “That’s who Nico wants,” with a second adding: “It’s happening.”
Another added: “Gotta see who he’s gonna mortgage what little is left of the Mavericks future for.”
And another wrote: “I think I’d rather have the guy in LA over the guy that’s the 11 seed.”
“He is really not done selling our future… unbelievable,” wrote another.
“It’s probs gonna happen enjoy our depth while you can,” expressed another fan.
“He does know it’s 2025, not 2018 right?”, asked another.
Even before the last trade deadline passed, Kevin Durant was named as a player the Dallas Mavericks wanted to acquire this coming summer.
Durant is widely expected to leave Phoenix, who made an attempt to trade him away at the past deadline.
Former NBA star Jeff Teague believes a trade for Durant could turn it around for the Mavs, but these comments were made before Irving went down injured.
Now a move for KD is a high-stakes swing for the Mavs, and a risky one for him too. But considering their suddenly weak position, Nico Harrison is backed into a corner and may feel it is a last throw of the dice to try and keep his job.
