JJ Redick was not impressed with the Los Angeles Lakers performance in the defeat to Memphis Grizzlies this week.
LA Lakers head coach JJ Redick called out every player on the team not called LeBron James.
James had put up 34 points for the Lakers in the loss. The rest of the players did not match James’ effort levels, Redick implied.
One player who came in for heavy criticism was D’Angelo Russell, who was benched by Redick during the match-up.
Speaking ahead of the Lakers home tilt against the suffering Philadelphia 76ers, former Laker Danny Green gave his verdict.
He described it as mind games from JJ Redick, who has been in the locker rooms as a player, and knows how to motivate them.
Green, recently retired, says he ‘loves’ Redick’s approach and believes D’Angelo Russell will respond in the right way.
He explained: “I love it, man. He set a standard. Not only is he bringing the most or the best out of D-Lo, because, you know how important he is to the group.
“D-Lo is a special player, and they’re going to need him to win, and when he’s at his best and playing his best basketball, they’re a really good team and tough team to stop. So not only is he challenging one of his best players.
“You know, when we’re younger, they say, if they stop yelling at you, you should worry.”
Green added that he does not expect Russell to be shocked or alarmed by the criticism, he will simply refocus and come out stronger.
Green added: “You know, D-Lo is taking it in a good stride. But not only is he getting on him and trying to get him to play best, but he’s setting a standard for everybody.
“He’s trying to change the atmosphere, trying to change the, you know, just the motive of everybody.
“And yeah, you know, I’ve had that plenty of times in my career throughout the years, but this is great. I love what he’s doing.”
