Dennis Schroder enjoyed a better second game on the Golden State Warriors than his first.
After his trade from the Brooklyn Nets to the Golden State Warriors, Dennis Schroder had a tough introduction to life on the Golden State Warriors.
The Warriors had their fifth-highest road defeat in franchise history, beaten heavily by the Memphis Grizzlies.
Against the Timberwolves, Golden State got back to winning ways, 113-103.
Dennis Schroder was named among the Warriors starters, and posted a modest stat-line of nine points, two rebounds and three assists.
Bigger numbers will come for Schroder. The biggest impact he made was how he helped the team when Stephen Curry was not on the court.
Speaking to the Warriors post-game broadcast, team legend Chris Mullins picked out how he saw Schroder helping the team.
Mullins explained: “It’s directly related to the non-Steph minutes with Schroder on the floor, where Brandin Podziemski doesn’t have to be the primary ball carrier.
“I like Brandin a lot when he catches and goes, and Schroder can set him up, he can get into the paint in turn.
“I thought Buddy Hield got more high quality shots, a lot of catch and shoots, not playing off the dribble, and then Jonathan Kuminga was efficient and effective.
“So I think the fact that Schroder can keep that team organized while Steph’s out of the game and get them good shots is a huge factor.
“It’s going to help the bench tremendously no doubt.”
Speaking after the previous Warriors loss, coach Steve Kerr admitted Schroder looked like a player on a new team.
Kerr was much happier after Schroder’s second game, praising his efforts, and the way the new signing was settling in.
He said: “You could see Dennis’s impact tonight on the game, but also what he’s going to bring to our team, his leadership.
“The way he was pulling guys aside during the time out to talk to them, encouraging them, even admonishing them when they needed to be admonished.
“So we need Dennis’s leadership, but his ball handling, the way he takes pressure off of Steph I think that allowed Steph to stay fresh and close the game out the way he did.”
Curry led the Warriors on scoring with 31 points – but he cannot play every minute, and if Schroder can keep the team steady when he is not on court, he will prove a worthy addition.
The Warriors needed this win, and have moved up into seventh place in the Western Conference, just one win behind the fifth placed Lakers.
