Denver Nuggets and New Orleans Pelicans tipped to agree trade, it would be best for both

While all eyes are directed toward Zach LaVine on the recently rumored trade hunt of the Denver Nuggets, the case for Brandon Ingram should also get the same attention as well.

As it is, it was also reported that the New Orleans Pelicans star has been one of the key few names being eyed as well by the Nuggets on a potential trade. Denver, relying too much on reigning league MVP Nikola Jokic, desires another offensive spark plug who can generate points and momentum.

Ingram is currently in an uncertain situation with the Pelicans. After failing to land a max extension for multiple teams, all signs lead on both sides to eventually work on a possible breakup.

Should the Nuggets go after Ingram, it has been widely expected that they’ll give up Michael Porter Jr. The sixth-year forward holds a $35MM annual salary which significantly matches the expiring $36MM contract of the Pelicans star.

While it is yet to be seen if a trade would truly be imminent, Lou Williams already likes a potential deal between the Nuggets and the Pelicans involving both players.

“I really love this for Brandon Ingram. I think this is a great opportunity for him to play alongside one of the more dominant and pass heavy bigs in the league. I think he benefits from the way that the Denver Nuggets play. I think this will be a great fit for him. And this will be a fresh start for Michael Porter Jr. as well,” Williams said on Run It Back.

“For both of these guys, I think it’s time for both of them to try to have an opportunity to try their hands at another team. I’m super in for both of these guys.”

Acquiring Ingram provides Denver with an added scorer and productive star next to Jokic and Jamal Murray. The All-Star swingman can create his own shots and be an offensive maker which gives Michael Malone another option.

But gaining Ingram could present tons of problems for the Nuggets. Denver will be burdened to retain him by offering his desired max deal, and this probable deal could further worsen the franchise’s salary cap and spending power. While a trade would certainly give Porter Jr. a fresh start, the injury-stricken New Orleans might be hesitant to pull it off considering the 26-year-old’s unavailability history.

An Ingram-Porter Jr. swap presents a double-edged sword for the Nuggets and the Pelicans, and both teams should be aware of it at the end of the day.
