Draymond Green explains reason behind Victor Wembanyama’s sophomore slump, says what he needs to ‘learn’

Victor Wembanyama has been underwhelming this season. Many expected him to improve on last year but he has actually gone backwards.

The San Antonio Spurs are only six games into an 82-game season, so there is probably no need to worry about Wemby’s performances.

But the Frenchman will need to step up if Gregg Popovich’s team want to make the playoffs, or even just the play-in tournament.

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green has explained why Wemby is struggling, as well as what he must ‘learn’ going forward.

It is not uncommon for young players to struggle in their second season in the NBA, and Wemby is the latest to do so.

Green gave one key reason why the 7’3″ center is finding it more difficult this time around, though he fully believes he will overcome it.

“When you come back from that first summer, everybody’s been watching you,” he said on The Draymond Green Show with Baron Davis.

“Defenses are prepared. It’s not the first time that everybody has seen you. There are game plans built to stop you. So, you have to adjust to that.

“I think Wemby is going through what most of us go through where he has to make those adjustments.

“I think what he’ll start to learn is he’s shooting 23% from three, some of [those shots] are bad and to start picking and choosing his spots.”

Victor Wembanyama’s stats in the 2024-25 season are down in all of the key categories, even though he is playing slightly more minutes.

Stats 2023-24 2024-25
Points (per game) 21.4 18.0
Rebounds (per game) 10.6 9.8
Assists (per game) 3.9 3.2
Field Goal % 46.5 42.7
Three Point % 32.5 22.0

The 20-year-old’s numbers are still solid but nowhere near what people were expecting from him this season. But the good news is there is still plenty of time for him to turn it around.

It would not come as a surprise if he were to increase his production to around 23 points per game and make his first All-Star appearance in February
