The San Antonio Spurs have made their intentions clear with De’Aaron Fox’s extension.
Even though the San Antonio Spurs traded for De’Aaron Fox last season, many didn’t expect the former Sacramento Kings star to sign an extension with the team this offseason.
After all, Fox was still under contract for the 2025-26 NBA season. Considering the Spurs have multiple talented guards, the massive four-year, $229m extension sounds worrying.
There’s no doubt that Fox is a talented player, but at the same time, the Spurs have two talented guards on their roster – Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper.
Castle has already shown his worth by winning the 2024-25 NBA Rookie of the Year award. On the other hand, Harper is expected to become a star in the league as he was the second overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
With Fox’s extension, the Spurs could stunt the growth of their young stars, and that’s what worries NBA analyst Kevin O’Connor.
Upon seeing O’Connor’s comments, Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green shared his two cents on Fox’s massive contract extension with the Spurs.
“Imagine the pieces you can bring in, in that salary slot, to help speed up a rebuild. One thing is for certain, in the next 24 months, Fox will not be a worse player than he is today,” Green wrote on Threads.
Green took a safe approach by supporting both sides of the story, as he didn’t take any unnecessary shots at Fox.
Even with the Spurs’ decision puzzling many, the reality is, the decision is final. Starting next season, Fox will enter Year 1 of his four-year, $229m deal with the franchise.
So, what is the best-case scenario for Fox? Well, as Green pointed out, Fox wouldn’t regress just yet in the NBA. After all, he’s still 27 years old.
Keeping that in mind, the goal for the Spurs should be to maximize that two-year window to potentially compete for an NBA Championship.
In the meantime, the Castle-Harper duo can continue to improve at a solid rate. After all, as of now, Fox is indeed a better player than either of them.
Assuming Castle or Harper reach All-Star status, that’s when things get tricky for the Spurs, as they’ll need to make a choice.
