The LA Lakers are struggling in all areas of their game right now, but former player James Worthy has shared one particular area of concern.
The Lakers fell to their fourth defeat in five games after going down 97-87 against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
JJ Redick is beginning to feel pressure from the fans as the team currently languishes in 11th place in the Western Conference with a 13-12 record.
Star player LeBron James is currently missing for ‘personal reasons’ and is also being linked with a trade to the Golden State Warriors.
While it is clear that all is not well in the Lakers camp former player James Worthy has pinpointed one particular area of concern.
From poor coaching to a lack of effort, numerous excuses have been made for the Lakers’ recent poor performances.
Kendrick Perkins recently explained how the side needed ‘lifejackets’ following an overtime defeat to the Atlanta Hawks.
While Worthy hasn’t called for the lifejackets he has singled out one key issue on the court that the team need to correct.
Speaking on Access SportsNet Worthy said: “When you turn the ball over you don’t even have an attempt on a play. The turnovers were just awful. You play hard on defense you get the ball and then you go down and turn it over.
“The turnovers man, it just depletes you mentally and you don’t have a chance to get organised and get a shot up which takes away from the whole morale of the game.
“When you turn the ball over like that and some of them were non-forced turnovers. You know inbounding the ball lazily and someone steals it right there under the bucket so I think they need to have a meeting of the mind and decide how they want to play.”
The team finished the game with no fewer than 22 turnovers, something that makes winning a game almost impossible.
While Worthy rightfully highlighted the Lakers continued problems one shining light from the game was Anthony Davis who top-scored for the team.
Davis’ form and effort levels have been questioned in recent weeks, but he looks to heading back to his best in the last three games.
The impact of Davis is even more important in the absence of LeBron, the side is no longer full of superstar names who can pick up the slack if one teammate is missing.
Davis has been the team’s top-scorer in the last two games and was only pipped by a single point by LeBron in the Hawks’ defeat.
Anthony Davis | vs. Atlanta Hawks | vs. Portland Trail Blazers | vs. Minnesota Timberwolves |
Points | 38 | 30 | 23 |
Rebounds | 10 | 11 | 11 |
Assists | 8 | 1 | 1 |
The stats look promising for Davis but it is important that he puts as much effort into his defense as he has his offense.
Lakers fans will be looking for the very best version of Davis in their next game against the high-flying Memphis Grizzlies, the match is turning into a must-win for the team and Redick.
