Fritz & Paul end Murray & Evans' medal dream – Olympic men's tennis doubles recap

It’s the end of the road for Dan Evans and Andy Murray and with that the end of Murray’s illustrious career – it has been a truly remarkable journey.

Overall, Evans / Paul were outplayed tonight by a sharp American duo, Tommy Paul especially looking magnificent. It’s on to the last four for Fritz / Paul; they will play Australia’s Matthew Ebden and John Peers in the semi-finals.

A miss by a whisker gives Fritz / Paul a double match point. One more forehand miss means they get it at the first time of asking.

They indeed take the advantage with a backhand volley from Murray for a break point, but Fritz somehow picks up a low ball at the net and defends.

Paul’s serve lets him down and it’s advantage GB again, but, once more, Paul pulls one out the bag to defend. Brilliant return from Murray for the advantage again but a double-handed volley from Fritz fends it off.

Once more, GB take the advantage and it’s defended, a cross volley from Murray brings them back in front and, finally, at the fifth time of asking, they get the break.

Fritz / Paul reign the returns and achieve a triple break point. A double fault gifts it away.

Quicker and more accurate from Fritz / Paul, but two great returns from Murray keep the GB duo in the match and a long line forehand from Evans indeed earns them a break point. Forehand volley from Evans and the game ends in the Brits’ favour.

Fritz / Paul make it look effortless now and earn a triple game point. Evans rips a volley back to defend the first and Paul gives the second away with a backhand error. A miss from Evans on the volley eventually gifts the games to the Americans though.

Paul’s backhanded return is looking mighty impressive and gives the Americans the lead. Forehand return again for the break point on 40-30 and they convert with a stunning backhand cross from Paul.
