Gilbert Arenas goes off at ex-Bucks star for calling 28 PPG Boston Celtics scorer ‘soft’

Gilbert Arenas was fuming after former NBA star Brandon Jennings took a shot at one member of the Boston Celtics.

The Boston Celtics‘ quickfire start to the 2024-25 NBA season has been somewhat neutralized over the last 10 games as they have gone 5-5 in that stretch.

They recently locked horns with the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference, the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder had no trouble putting away the defending champions.

Speaking of the Celtics, their recent form has sparked a debate in the media regarding the true leader of the team. Is it Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown?

For years, the dynamic duo of Tatum and Brown had been on the cusp of lifting the Larry O’Brien trophy. They finally succeeded last season with Brown winning the 2024 NBA Finals MVP.

While the Celtics have usually promoted Tatum as the bigger star, many have doubted JT’s stature as the best superstar on the C’s since then.

Former Milwaukee Bucks guard Brandon Jennings was the latest to question Tatum as he labeled him as ‘soft.’

Is [Jayson Tatum] the softest Boston Celtics superstar ever. … I think I’ll be more afraid of Jaylen Brown than Jayson Tatum,” Jennings said.

Since making his NBA debut, there are only a handful of NBA players who have been more consistent than Tatum. However, due to his seemingly introverted demeanor on the court, many have taken it the Celtcs star being soft.

It’s truly insulting to JT’s NBA legacy and ex-NBA star Gilbert Arenas ensured to give Jennings an earful for his wild take.

While Arenas has called out Tatum’s weaknesses, he took offense to BJ’s recent take on the Celtics superstar. He used NBA legend Tracy McGrady’s example to make his point.

“T-Mac [Tracy McGrady] was laid back too. What did he average? Until your ___ got out there and had to guard it. It looked cool till you had to guard it. What is Jayson Tatum averaging?” Arenas said.

“Because whoever is saying he’s soft- that’s a soft ___ 28 PPG he’s averaging. Go on out there and get your head bust! I don’t know what soft means.”

Jennings further clarified his point that Arenas was avoiding his question. Then Agent 0’s co-hosts started naming Celtics legends such as Kevin Garnett, Bill Russell, Paul Pierce, and more, who fit the definition of ‘tough’ stars.

To which, Arenas said, “I don’t know what they are talking about. I would have guarded Bill Russell in the last second of the game. Give him the ball! Then I want to guard Kevin McHale next, I’m just going to go by percentage. … I don’t want to guard the dude who has got 28 [PPG] a game.”

All things considered, Arenas never really understood Jennings’ question. On the other hand, being tough or soft doesn’t really matter until a player is getting the job done and leading his team to wins.
