Gina Carano settles Elon Musk-backed lawsuit against Disney over her exit from ‘The Mandalorian’

Gina Carano’s battle against Disney has come to an end.

On Thursday, Carano’s attorneys and lawyers representing Disney filed a joint brief in the U.S. District Court Central District of California asking the courts to dismiss the lawsuit with prejudice after they came to a mutual agreement over the grievances.

“Plaintiff Gina Carano, on the one hand, and Defendants The Walt Disney Company, Lucasfilm Ltd. LLC, and Huckleberry Industries (US) Inc., on the other, by and through their undersigned counsel, hereby stipulate that this action and all claims, including all defenses asserted therein, be dismissed with prejudice.”

After filing paperwork with the courts, Disney released a statement regarding the lawsuit settlement with Carano, although terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm are pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement with Gina Carano to resolve the issues in her pending lawsuit against the companies,” Lucasfilm said in the statement. “Ms. Carano was always well respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect. With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future.”

The lawsuit filed by Carano was backed by Twitter owner Elon Musk after he vowed to support anybody facing persecution over statements made on his social media platform.

The entire ordeal centered around Carano claiming discrimination and wrongful termination after she was removed from her recurring role in the Star Wars spinoff series The Mandalorian.

Lucasfilm and Disney cut ties with Carano back in 2021 after announcing she would not be returning for the third season of the show and she was “not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future.”

The fallout came from Carano’s posts on social media with one image that included a message that seemingly compared living as a conservative in the United States to the atrocities suffered by Jews during the holocaust in Nazi Germany. Lucasfilm, which is owned by Disney, denounced the post, calling it “abhorrent and unacceptable.”

Carano, who was considered one of the biggest stars in MMA during the height of her career before turning her full attention to acting, also lost her representation at UTA after she was dropped by the talent agency.

In the aftermath of her dismissal by Disney, Carano filed the lawsuit claiming she was bullied on social media and that Disney/Lucasfilm harassed her over her views on Black Lives Matter, her problems with gender pronouns, and rallying against mandates issued during the COVID-19 pandemic. She added that Disney and Lucasfilm allegedly ignored her male co-stars, who routinely voiced their opinions on social media but faced no reprisal as a result.

Carano was seeking at least a sum of $75,000 along with punitive damages and forcing Disney to rehire her for the role she had on The Mandalorian.

Back in July 2024, a judge denied a motion to dismiss the case from Disney’s attorneys, which set the stage for the court case to end up going to trial. Instead, Carano has reached a resolution with Disney that apparently satisfied both parties and the lawsuit is now dead and buried once the courts sign off.
