The Golden State Warriors are yet to seal an agreement with Al Horford, but help is at hand.
Al Horford has been tipped to sign with the Golden State Warriors after his contract with the Boston Celtics expired.
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is a confirmed long-time admirer of Al Horford, and the veteran would fit the team’s timeline.
Last week NBA insider Brian Windhorst said he believes the Warriors will strike a deal for Al Horford, but there has been no agreement yet.
Insider Marc J. Spears provided an update on the Al Horford situation during a segment on ESPN’s NBA Today.
Spears says the Warriors anticipated they would close the deal for Horford already, and it has not yet happened.
He explained that there are three competing teams in the mix for Horford’s signature.
Spears said: “The one everyone is wondering about is Al Horford. Golden State expected him to sign last week. He didn’t.
“Lakers, Milwaukee, Atlanta I believe are all interested in a nearly 40-year-old guy, who also has retirement on the table. He’s not in any hurry.”
Spears added that the Warriors could have a little help at hand thanks to Al Horford’s son, who he believes will play a pivotal role in the decision.
And the prospect of seeing his dad team up with an elite superstar in Steph Curry could have some sway.
“Keep in mind, you know who I think is going to be in this decision, his 10 year old son Ian.
“He just started traveling with Al on the road two seasons ago, kid loves basketball, I know he’s like ‘dad, Steph Curry’.
“So I could see Ian convincing his dad to keep playing.”
The big uncertainty overshadowing the Golden State Warriors offseason is the uncertainty over Jonathan Kuminga.
Kuminga is a restricted free agent, and the Warriors are yet to offer an extension, or find a partner for a sign-and-trade.
Spears cannot promise there is a quick resolution in sight, commenting: “The Kuminga situation is complicated man. His agent met with the Warriors last week, still no answer.”
There has been speculation Kuminga could pen an extension with the Warriors, under the agreement he would be traded away midseason, although fans are unconvinced about how this would work,
