India v England, 4th Test Day 4 LIVE – Morning session wickets keep England in the hunt

An absorbing opening session leaves both sides feeling victory is very much possible.

The India openers put on another 44 runs to the overnight total before Yashasvi Jaiswal tried to hit Joe Root’s first ball of the morning over the covers and was caught brilliantly by Jimmy Anderson diving forwards behind square.

From this point onwards it was England’s morning with Tom Hartley taking the big wicket, eliciting a slight edge from Rohit Sharma as he came down the wicket, with Ben Foakes taking the catch and then stumping the skipper as well.

Rajat Patidar was not long in the middle, heading back without scoring when he nicked a ball from Shoaib Bashir in front of his pad which flew towards the leg side but Ollie Pope dived high to his right to grab a catch.

Gill and Jadeja see out the final over of the morning session comfortably. They will be happy to get back in the pavillion.

Root comes back into bowl. A couple of sharp singles from it. Stokes changing the field almost every ball to keep the batsmen’s minds racing. Jadeja almost gets himself in a tangle from the last ball playing a defensive with back knee on the floor.

He is the most honest bowler Bashir. He strikes Gill’s pad and though Stokes is interested he shakes his head believing, correctly, it is going down the leg side. Another maiden.

Gill just staying in his crease now and looking to play Hartley late. It just takes one ball to misbehave…

As a bowler you’d much rather see Jadeja just looking to defend and Bashir almost hurries the penultimate ball past him. The Indian batsmen surely looking at getting to lunch with their wickets intact now.

A nice looking drive gets Gill two more towards the India target.

Gill scores three to narrow third man with a controlled edge, then.Jadeja just misses a big turner outside his off stump.

Runs look hard to come by now. Hartley is also teasing the batsmen with each delivery and not giving them anything easy to release the pressure.

Bashir is bowling beautifully. Jadeja is not looking confident facing him. One delivery strikes the pads but was missing off stump.

Root saves four overthrows with a fine diving stop. England’s fielders are realy on the ball today. A ball freakishly hits a crack moves too much and misses Jadeja’s pad and the leg stump and goes for four byes. Who would be a keeper?

What a Test match we have now.

England now believe! Pope takes a great catch diving to his right at short leg after Bashir takes the inside edge of Patidar’s bat in front of the pad. Another sublime catch secures a wicket.

Replays show it actually nicked Rohit’s bat when it went past the outside edge. Either way Foakes gets a dismissal.

Wow, didn’t see this coming. Rohit comes down the track and is beaten by Hartley with Foakes as sharp as ever behind the stumps. You have to say there is a chance now for England.

Bashir beats Gill with the first ball and they appeal for leg before but it is going down the leg side.

Rohit pushes through the offside for a single. India halfway there, England living on a prayer. Hartley beats Gill with a beautiful off spinner just missing his outside edge, before he scores a single off the last ball.

The Indian batsman comfortably see through the first over after the drinks break.

Gill faces the whole over from Hartley pretty confidently and takes a single off the last ball. The players are now taking drinks.

Rohit with another chip over the infield which suits England as they feel they can get Gill here, but he looks more solid by the end of the over, pushing down to mid off for a single.

Hartley is now back into the attack, with Root coming off after taking the wicket. Rohit pushes through the covers for two runs to bring up a very good fifty.

Bashir into bowl at the other end now. Gill looking to come out of his crease each ball. England will feel they can get his wicket here. Rohit flicks the last ball over the infield to keep the strike. Good play from the skipper.

Gill gets off the mark but England are buzzing in the field now.

The change of bowling works, Jaiswal looks to hit inside-out over extra cover but the ball flies behind with Anderson taking the ball with a brilliant diving catch at 45.

A good over from Hartley with just the one single coming from it. Now Root is coming into bowl.

Jaiswal hits two fours off the last two deliveries, a sweep for four and then with Bashir dropping short he cuts for another boundary.

Hartley comes into bowl and strikes Jaiswal on the pad as he came forward at him. England went upstairs but the snickometer suggested the India opener’s bat brushed the ball first. Jaiswal then reverse sweeps the final ball for a boundary.

Rohit sweeps firmly and accurately to the square leg boundary. These two looking in great nick.

Some indecision on a quick single called by Jaiswal from Rohit, but he gets to the bowler’s end safely. Jaiswal walks at Anderson before turning him on the leg side.

Put in a third man? Bashir conceded four from a ball rearing and nicking Jaiswal’s gloves, then outrunning Anderson to the boundary.

Rohit brings up the India fifty with a remarkable shot high over the boundary at long on to a ball just slightly full angling into middle and leg stump.

Bashir is sharing the bowling duties and put in a pretty good first over landing it in dangerous areas.

Jimmy Anderson takes the new ball and is right on target making Rohit play, but not giving him anything to put away easily.
