England win extraordinary first Test

What a performance this has been from England. They looked dead and buried after two days, but a string of magnificent individual performances has seen them take a most-unexpected 1-0 series lead.

This is just the fifth time that India have lost a Test in home conditions since 2012, and is the first time they have ever lost at home when having such a significant first-innings lead.

Ollie Pope’s sublime 196 rescued England from near-certain defeat and helped set a target that gave England’s bowlers a chance.

But few would have expected that it would be debutant Tom Hartley, who struggled so much in the first innings, who would be the one to bowl India out.

His figures of 7-62 are truly special, and it was fitting that he got the winning wicket.

There were plenty of moments during the chase when India began to look relatively comfortable, only for momentum to swing back England’s way.

But no dismissal was quite as spectacular as the Ben Stokes run out that send Ravindra Jadeja packing and got England into the lower order.

What a performance from England, and what a match! And we don’t have long to wait until the second Test either, with play starting at 4am on Friday 2 February in Visakhapatnam.

ENGLAND WIN BY 28 RUNS!

Mohammed Siraj stumped Ben Foakes bowled Tom Hartley for 12 (20b)

Siraj charges Hartley in the last over of the day and gets nowhere near it, with Foakes whipping off the bails to complete a famous win for England.

What an astonishing achievement by England, and a brilliant day for Tom Hartley, who has picked up seven wickets to win it on Test debut.

India 202-9 (Bumrah 6, Siraj 12) Overs: 69

India require 39 runs. England need one wicket

England bring Wood into the attack in the Hyderabad gloom to try and prise out the final wicket.

He targets the stumps but there’s no luck, despite two run-out attempts – the first kicked onto the stumps as he charged onto a ball and the second flicked back onto the poles at the non-striker’s end. The batters are safe on both occasions and the crowd are buzzing.

India 199-9 (Bumrah 5, Siraj 12) Overs: 68

India require 32 runs. England need one wicket

Siraj hacks away a four that temporarily gives Rehan some hope of a catch in the deep.

Foakes appeals for another stumping and it’s good keeping, but the foot looks like it never left the ground and the decision is not out.

Siraj then charges Hartley and inside edges over the stump and wide of the keeper. It’s a no-ball too.

They run two off the extra ball, beating the throw of Stokes. India’s fans are up off their seats now. Surely this final-wicket pair can’t take them home?!

The ground is pretty dark now, with one slither of light across the centre of the pitch and the rest in shadow.

India 191-9 (Bumrah 5, Siraj 5) Overs: 67

India require 40 runs. England need one wicket

Rehan is into the attack and he bowls a dangerous over that goes for two runs. India could still take this to a fifth day…

India 189-9 (Bumrah 3, Siraj 5) Overs: 66

India require 42 runs. England need one wicket

Foakes whips off the bails as Bumrah jumps in disappointment at missing out on a sweep, in an odd bit of batting, and it goes upstairs.

It’s excellent keeping, very opportunistic, but his foot was just down before the bails lit up.

India 188-9 (Bumrah 2, Siraj 5) Overs: 65

India require 43 runs. England need one wicket

This pair know they can’t survive by prodding and poking, so have a bit of a swing in the hope of somehow getting enough streaky runs to get India over the line.

Two wild swipes catch looping edges, but on both occasions the ball falls short of Duckett at backward point, and England are forced to wait for that crucial final wicket.

WICKET! India 182-9 (Bumrah 2, Siraj 3) Overs: 64

Ravichandran Ashwin stumped by Ben Foakes bowled Tom Hartley for 28

The umpires come down to tell the two batters that Stokes has opted to take the extra half hour, and it has an immediate impact on Ashwin’s resolve, as he charges at Hartley and is stumped miles out of his ground by Ben Foakes.

He has to go for 28 and England need one more wicket to win this Test.

Hartley has 6-48. What a performance!

The over goes for five runs as Bumrah and Siraj flap away and pick up some streaky runs.

India 177-8 (Ashwin 28, Bumrah 0) Overs: 63

India require 54 runs. England need two wickets

Root gets the ball to talk, testing both edges of Ashwin’s bat, and seeing a nick fall just short of Crawley at slip.

Kevin Pietersen on commentary is desperate for the extra half hour… but is Ben Stokes and are the umpires? We’ll soon find out.

The over goes for one run and there’s one scheduled over remaining today.

WICKET! India 176-8 (Ashwin 27) Overs: 62

Srikar Bharat bowled Tom Hartley for 28 (59b)

Time for a bit of Hartley as Stokes tries things late in the day. And he makes the breakthrough with an absolute beauty off the last ball of the over!

He gets one to turn from just wide of leg to clip off stump, beating Bharat and ending this superb partnership.

It’s a five-for on Test debut for Hartley and we now have the possibility that the umpires might allow England to use the extra half hour. The light is fading but it’s not out of the question.

India 173-7 (Bharat 28, Ashwin 24) Overs: 61

India require 58 runs. England need three wickets

A ball from Leach turns an absolute mile and Foakes does well to grab it. It’s so wide that the umpire has no choice but to signal for a wide, which is greeted by a cheer from the home fans.

The shadows are lengthening across the crease as the sun begins to drop low in the Hyderabad sky, and India are looking golden right now as Ashwin cuts away for four to bring up the fifty partnership.

It’s not the best over from Leach and nine runs come from it.

India 164-7 (Bharat 27, Ashwin 17) Overs: 60

India require 67runs. England need three wickets

Stokes goes back to Root as he shuffles his pack.

India rotate the strike, with Bharat looking particularly willing to take risks and move his feet. This has been an outstanding partnership, setting up a classic Test cricket scenario with tension on all sides.

Three singles come from the over and India require 67. The close of play could be on the horizon if these two can stick in.

India 161-7 (Bharat 25, Ashwin 16) Overs: 59

India require 70 runs. England need three wickets

Bharat’s eyes light up as Rehan puts one in the slot, and he absolutely lashes the ball away for four through mid-on.

That’s got the home crowd excited, and this pair have changed the feeling of this contest.

It feels really in the balance right now, with a win for India within reach, but England still hoping to get stuck into the tail tonight and wrap it up themselves.

India 155-7 (Bharat 20, Ashwin 15) Overs: 58

India require 76 runs. England need three wickets

Ashwin sends Bharat back as he looks for a single that was never there, and he just makes his ground. The throw wasn’t particularly great, but he reacted in enough time to get back regardless I think.

Hartley continues to probe and Bharat again gets an unintentional toe edge, but the ball drops well short of first slip. England are getting frustrated by this run of luck for the India batter.

India 152-7 (Bharat 18, Ashwin 15) Overs: 57

India require 78 runs. England need three wickets

Rehan bowls an absolutely peach that sneaks past the edge and fractionally wide of the stumps.

And Bharat adds insult to injury by smashing a short-pitched delivery for four.

One bursts through the top late in the over and catches the toe end of Bharat’s bat as he looks to leave, spearing the ball between keeper and slip and away for four. That wasn’t a chance, there was no realistic way either could have reacted in time to such a significant and late change of direction.

It does add valuable runs though, and the chances of an India win have just increased. England need some inspiration here.

India 144-7 (Bharat 9, Ashwin 15) Overs: 56

India require 87 runs. England need three wickets

India want to get through until close of play and start again on day five and are bedded in.

They play out another Hartley over for a maiden.

India 144-7 (Bharat 9, Ashwin 15) Overs: 55

India require 87 runs. England need three wickets

Stokes decides to try something different and gives Rehan another over, and it’s a good one.

He gets some nice turn and bounce, with Foakes taking one snorter particularly smoothly.

But there’s still no wicket and one run comes from the over. Those required runs are ticking down.

India 143-7 (Bharat 9, Ashwin 14) Overs: 54

India require 88 runs. England need three wickets

Hartley gets through yet another good over that goes for just the one run.

These two look pretty calm out in the middle though, with 10 overs left in the day’s play.

India 142-7 (Bharat 9, Ashwin 13) Overs: 53

India require 89 runs. England need three wickets

Wood continues and bowls a dangerous over that goes for just the one single.

The Barmy Army decide this is the over to try and inject some life into the atmosphere as things start to drift a little, standing en-masse and chanting along with the strains of the trumpet, and India’s fans respond.

Suddenly there’s a buzz around the ground again, with both teams very much in this game.

India 141-7 (Bharat 9, Ashwin 12) Overs: 52

India require 90 runs. England need three wickets

Hartley comes back into the attack, with figures of 4-41 today.

Ashwin knocks the last ball of the over for a single to keep the strike.

India 140-7 (Bharat 9, Ashwin 11) Overs: 51

India require 91 runs. England need three wickets

Wood continues and there’s a big appeal for an lbw, but the ball was going down leg and the umpire says no. Stokes agrees.

Wood cranks up the pace, touching on 90mph, but he can’t find the breakthrough.

India 138-7 (Bharat 9, Ashwin 10) Overs: 50

India require 93 runs. England need three wickets

Root continues as England attempt to break this partnership. Ashwin and Bharat have done well to stop the momentum and settle things down, and the long they stay out there the more confidence they’ll get of rescuing the win for India. Both results are still very much in the mix.

A short ball to finish the over is knocked for two.

India 136-7 (Bharat 9, Ashwin 8) Overs: 49

India require 95 runs. England need three wickets

England turn to Wood in search of wickets. He’s a little bit down on his top pace but is targeting the stumps still.

Two singles come off the over.

India 134-7 (Bharat 8, Ashwin 7) Overs: 48

India require 97 runs. England need three wickets

Root appeals for an lbw against Bharat, but it doesn’t look quite right and Stokes opts against the review when the umpire says not out.

The replay says that the ball was bouncing over and England would have lost their last review, so that was an excellent call.

Bharat charges down the wicket to Root and hacks one into the on-side as he goes on the attack.

And he follows up with a reverse sweep for a single. The change of intent from Bharat has been sudden and notable.

Watch Ben Stokes’ stunning run out

This moment of magic from Ben Stokes has helped England into their dominant position.

India 131-7 (Bharat 5, Ashwin 7) Overs: 47

India require 100 runs. England need three wickets

Leach drops one a bit short and Ashwin tears into it with a cut away for four.

That boundary leaves India needing 100 runs to win, and this game isn’t over just yet. While these two are out in the middle India have a good chance.

India 125-7 (Bharat 4, Ashwin 2) Overs: 46

India require 106 runs. England need three wickets

Nice again from Root as he probes with a decent line and length. The last ball of the over bounces on Bharat and loops off the body and over the keeper, but there’s no run.

India 123-7 (Bharat 3, Ashwin 1) Overs: 45

India require 108 runs. England need three wickets

That’s a rare loose shot after a tight spell of play, with Ashwin swiping at a wide one from Leach and cutting airily into the covers.

Leach targets the stumps with the final ball of the over, skidding one through, but Ashwin defends well. He’ll relish this situation, the all-rounder. But there’s a lot of work still to do for India.

India 122-7 (Bharat 2, Ashwin 1) Overs: 44

India require 109 runs. England need three wickets

Hartley’s latest over goes for just the one single as India regroup.

India 121-7 (Bharat 1, Ashwin 1) Overs: 43

India require 110 runs. England need three wickets

Just one run comes off another great over from Leach, with England all over this pair.

This is the last true batting partnership for India, and a wicket here would leave England closing in. But there’s still work to do.

India 120-7 (Bharat 0, Ashwin 1) Overs: 42

India require 111 runs. England need three wickets

There’s a huge appeal as Hartley thinks he’s got an edge and Foakes holds on behind the stumps, but the umpire is unmoved. Pope gives the thumbs up and Stokes quickly reviews.

But replays show that Ashwin’s sweep shot missed the ball completely, with no spike on ultraedge, and the noise must have come from somewhere else. England lose a second review.

It’s a maiden for Hartley, who has looked a completely different bowler today.

WICKET! India 120-7 (Bharat 0, Ashwin 1) Overs: 41

Shreyas Iyer caught by Joe Root bowled Jack Leach for 13 (31b)

England turn back to Leach, who is struggling with that knee injury but is bowling well nevertheless.

And he gets a wicket with just his second ball of the over, enticing the edge from Iyer that is clutched by Root at slip. England are buoyant and the wickets keep on tumbling.

India 119-6 (Shreyas 13, Bharat 0) Overs: 40

India require 112 runs. England need four wickets

It’s a maiden for Hartley as India regroup.

There’s still Ashwin to come, and he can certainly bat, so there’s still plenty of opportunity for the home side to pull themselves out of trouble in this fourth innings. But it’s going to be tense from hereon in, that’s for sure.

WICKET! India 119-6 (Shreyas 13, Bharat 0) Overs: 39

Ravindra Jadeja run out by Ben Stokes for 2 (20b)

Oh hang on, what have you just done Ben Stokes!? India go for a quick single and Stokes produces a moment of absolute magic in the field to run out Jadeja.

It’s a magnificent under-armed reverse flick of a throw that hits the stumps flush on, and replays show that Jadeja is well short of his ground. That is simply astonishing fielding and India are six down.

Jadeja can’t believe it and walks off with his head bowed.

KS Bharat is the new batter and India need a partnership and quickly. That wicket has sucked the atmosphere out of the home crowd, almost like Stokes just flipped a switch.

It’s a wicket maiden as Root keeps things tight.

India 119-5 (Shreyas 13, Jadeja 2) Overs: 38

India require 112 more runs to win

Hartley has had so much more control today, but he gets it a bit wrong to send down a full toss, and Shreyas says thank you very much and puts it away for four.

That’s got the crowd on their feet and chants of “India, India” reverberate around the stands. It’s been mainly the travelling England fans who’ve been making the noise today.

India 115-5 (Shreyas 9, Jadeja 2) Overs: 37

India require 116 more runs to win

Is that a missed chance? Root gets the ball to fizz out of the rough and it loops up and just past the fingertips of Pope at leg slip. It may have just come off the pad, but it wasn’t far away from the glove.

India are playing it relatively safe with their approach at the moment, resisting the temptation to go on the attack for a flurry of runs that would bring the target within more comfortable reach.

India 112-5 (Shreyas 7, Jadeja 1) Overs: 36

India require 119 more runs to win

Hartley bowls and get some shouts of encouragement from the close fielders. He’s been a real threat today and has fully justified the faith that Stokes showed in him earlier in the match.

There’s a big appeal late in the over for an lbw, but Stokes says no. Replays suggest that was wise as the ball was heading down leg.

India 109-5 (Shreyas 5, Jadeja 0) Overs: 35

India require 122 more runs to win

That’s another great over from Root and he very nearly gets Jadeja, finding an edge that drops short of slip.

England have a sniff at a famous win here, but one decent partnership for India would put them in control with plenty of batting still to come.

India 108-5 (Shreyas 4, Jadeja 0) Overs: 34

India require 123 more runs to win

It’s another decent over from Hartley, who is getting some really inconsistent bounce.

Foakes does particularly well to stop one that keeps low and shoots down the leg side.

WICKET! India 107-5 (Shreyas 3, Jadeja 0) Overs: 33

KL Rahul lbw to Joe Root for 22 (48b)

Root gets another and it’s Rahul who has to go, trapped in-front. He reviews, but DRS says no edge and three reds and Rahul departs for 22.

Ravindra Jadeja is the new man in, with India in big need of a pressure-releasing partnership.

India 102-4 (Rahul 22, Shreyas 2) Overs: 32

India require 129 more runs to win

Hartley continues, with the left-armer on figures of 4-31. What an improvement it’s been from him, and what faith captain Stokes showed in him throughout those first-innings struggles.

One keeps incredibly low from Hartley and it scoots past everybody, beating the bat, stumps and keeper to race away for four byes. There wasn’t a huge amount that Foakes could do about that – the ball barely got off the ground.

India 97-4 (Rahul 22, Shreyas 1) Overs: 31

India require 134 more runs to win

There were a few words between new batter Shreyas Iyer and the England fielders as he came out to bat, with even Leach piping up, which you don’t see too much. I wonder what that was all about? People are smiling but the pressure is really on Iyer here, with the innings at a pivotal point.

Root bowls the second over of the session with Shreyas batting in a cap against the spin.

The over goes for two singles.

WICKET! India 95-4 (Rahul 21, Shreyas 0) Overs: 30

Axar Patel caught and bowled by Tom Hartley for 17 (42b)

Hartley resumes after tea and he picks up a wicket in the first over of the session.

It’s a poor shot from Axar, who wafts at one and sends it straight back to the bowler for a return catch. Hartley has four and England’s tails are up.

India require 136 runs and England need six more wickets. What a final session of day four we have ahead of us!

A stunning result at the Gabba

While the players enjoy tea in Hyderabad, let’s take a look at the winning moment as West Indies pulled off a famous victory over Australia in Brisbane.

The tourists won by eight runs in a nail-biting finish to secure their first win on Australian soil in 26 years.

TEA: India 95-3 (Rahul 21, Axar 17) Overs: 29

India require 136 more runs to win

Root returns and he gets a hint of a chance as a ball pops into the leg side off Rahul, potentially off the hip, but drops safely in any case.

It’s a maiden for Root and that’s tea, with India still requiring 136 more runs and England needing seven wickets.

It’s Hartley who has all three wickets to have fallen in the session, with India captain Rohit Sharma being the most recent to fall for 39.

India 95-3 (Rahul 21, Axar 17) Overs: 28

India require 136 more runs to win

Wood continues with the third over of this spell as England go hunting for wickets.

He takes a bit of a trademark tumble off the fifth ball of the over as he looks to extract all the pace he can from a sluggish pitch.

India 94-3 (Rahul 20, Axar 17) Overs: 27

India require 137 more runs to win

Tea isn’t far away and England turn to Rehan Ahmed for the first time in the innings.

Axar has no intention of allowing the youngster to settle and hammers him down the ground for four as Rehan overpitches slightly. And he follows it up with a gorgeous drive through the covers for another four.

Axar finishes the over with a ruthless pull to the rope as 13 runs come from the over.

This is the risk with Rehan – he’s a wicket-taking threat, but can be expensive. And England don’t have a heap of runs to play with.

India 81-3 (Rahul 19, Axar 5) Overs: 26

India require 150 more runs to win

Wood continues and he targets the stumps again. He takes the pace off one with an off-cutter, but Axar spots it and defends well.

It’s a maiden for England’s sole quick bowler.

India 81-3 (Rahul 19, Axar 5) Overs: 25

India require 150 more runs to win

Brilliant batting from Rahul, as he sweeps twice to the boundary, taking on Hartley and punishing a slightly wayward line.

That’s the sort of momentum India need, and it brings the runs required down to 150, with seven wickets still in hand.

India 73-3 (Rahul 11, Axar 5) Overs: 24

India require 158 more runs to win

It’s another bowling change for England, as Stokes calls on Wood to bowl his second over of the day, having sent down a fiery one-over spell with the new ball.

England’s pacer targets the stumps at pace, but it’s well handled by Rahul and Axar.

India 72-3 (Rahul 10, Axar 5) Overs: 23

India require 159 more runs to win

Hartley replaces Leach, who is likely to bowl pretty short spells given the injury issues with his knee.

It’s a nice over from the tall left-armer, who gets one to turn a mile off straight – too much if anything, as Rahul had plenty of opportunity to watch it spin away.

India 70-3 (Rahul 9, Axar 4) Overs: 22

India require 161 more runs to win

Root continues with his second spell. He opened the bowling at the start of the innings and looked dangerous with the new ball, and he’s getting decent turn again here.

India are happy enough to take it steady against England’s all-rounder, knocking him for three singles in the over.

There’s plenty more batting to come for India, who are one partnership away from being in control of this chase. But England have the wickets that they wanted and are firmly in this match. One thing we know for sure is that the draw is pretty much off the table with so much time left in the match and the weather set fair.

India 67-3 (Rahul 8, Axar 2) Overs: 21

India require 164 more runs to win

Tidy again from Leach, who goes for two singles off another decent over.

India 65-3 (Rahul 7, Axar 1) Overs: 20

India require 166 more runs to win

It’s a maiden for Root so let’s take that as an opportunity to look back on the wickets that got the ball rolling for England.

First to go was Jaiswal as Hartley and Pope combined to take the first wicket.

And Gill lasted just two balls before being brilliantly caught by Pope.

And Hartley struck again just moments ago to remove Rohit and put England in a great position to push on for what would be a truly historic victory.

India 65-3 (Rahul 7, Axar 1) Overs: 19

India require 166 more runs to win

England’s tails are up as Leach continues, defying the knee injury that kept him off the field for the start of this innings.

He bowls a tidy over that goes for two singles.

WICKET! India 63-3 (Rahul 6, Axar 0) Overs: 18

Rohit Sharma lbw to Tom Hartley for 39 (58b)

Got him! Hartley strikes Rohit on the front pad, just below the knee roll and up goes the finger. The India captain reviews, but DRS shows all three reds and the ball cannoning in to middle stump. It’s a huge breakthrough for England and India are three down.

What a return it’s been from Hartley after that tough stint in India’s first innings. And credit to Stokes for putting confidence in his inexperienced left-armer and bringing him into the attack so early.

India adjust to the departure of Rohit with an interesting move on their own part, promoting Axar up from number nine to come in at five. He’s got a very handy Test record with the bat does the all-rounder, better than some of England’s top order.

India 63-2 (Rohit 39, Rahul 6) Overs: 17

India require 168 more runs to win

Brilliant from Rohit, who takes some risks to take on a trap that England have purposefully set with two very close fielders, reverse-sweeping over them for back-to-back boundaries off Leach.

It’s a fascinating field, with Bairstow in so close at second slip that his starting position is on his knees.

India 53-2 (Rohit 30, Rahul 5) Overs: 16

Play resumes after drinks and Hartley gets one to rip past the outside edge of Rahul’s bat.

But Rohit finishes off the over in style, sweeping for four to bring up India’s 50 and draw a cheer from the crowd.

The skipper is the key here – he’s probably the best batter in the world for this kind of scenario.

The story of the day so far

Pope has been in the thick of the action in the field at silly point, and he takes one square on the helmet from Rahul, which of course means the physios to come on and give him the once over. Rahul apologises and the umpires decide that’s an appropriate time for a drinks break.

India are 48-2 after Hartley bagged two wickets in an over thanks to brilliant catches by Pope, with Jaiswal and Gill the batters to depart.

The home side still require 183 runs to win after a morning that largely went England’s way.

Pope played beautifully to go past 150 early in the day, putting on partnerships with Rehan and Hartley that helped England up to a good score of 420 and setting India a competitive target of 231.

However, three quick wickets wrapped the innings up in a flash just before lunch, with Pope the final batter to fall, as he departed for 196 going for a reverse scoop off Bumrah to bring up his double hundred. If that final sentence doesn’t sum up Bazball then I don’t know what does.

India 48-2 (Rohit 26, Rahul 4) Overs: 15

Leach will be encouraged by a maiden over that sees him get one ball to really rip, beating the edge of Rohit’s bat.

India 48-2 (Rohit 26, Rahul 4) Overs: 14

India require 183 more runs to win

Rahul gets off the mark as he finds the boundary off a short ball from Hartley.

There was a hint of a chance there in the field for Crawley, with the ball dropping in-front of him to his left, but the fielder not only didn’t catch it, he didn’t even see the ball.

A huge win for West Indies

Over at the Gabba, Shamar Joseph has picked up his seventh wicket to seal a stunning and nail-biting win for West Indies over Australia, winning by eight runs with Joseph taking 7-68 on the final day and bowling with a broken toe.

That is one of the great stories for a very young West Indies team on a tour where very few visiting sides ever get the better of Australia.

India 43-2 (Rohit 25, Rahul 0) Overs: 13

India require 188 more runs to win

England react to that double-wicket over by bringing Jack Leach into the attack for the first time today. They’ll be hoping his knee is flexible enough to allow him to play a big part in the session.

KL Rahul is the new batter and he defends the final ball of an over that costs just the one run.

DOUBLE WICKET OVER! India 42-2 (Rohit 24) Overs: 12

Yashasvi Jaiswal caught by Ollie Pope bowled Tom Hartley for 15 (35b)

Shubman Gill caught by Ollie Pope bowled Tom Hartley for 0 (2b)

What an over! England are jubilant.

Jaiswal is the first to walk off as Pope’s brilliant day continues, taking a reaction catch as a flick off the hip goes straight into the hands of the short leg fielder.

It’s the breakthrough that England desperately wanted and a deserved reward for Hartley, who has bowled nicely in his opening spell.

And Shubman Gill, the new batter in at number three, goes second ball as Pope holds on to an even better catch at silly point, moving low to his right as Hartley draws the loose prod from Gill.

Stunning stuff! We have a real game on here!

India 38-0 (Rohit 24, Jaiswal 11) Overs: 11

India require 193 more runs to win

This opening partnership is exactly what India would have wanted, getting through the new ball and eating into the deficit nice and early.

The players take a brief pause for an unscheduled drink after a Root over goes for three runs.

India 35-0 (Rohit 22, Jaiswal 10) Overs: 10

India require 196 more runs to win

Nice from Hartley. He gets plenty of turn and strikes Rohit on the pads, but that pitched well outside leg so there’s nothing doing.

Leach is on the field and warming up – are we about to see him get a go?

Meanwhile, West Indies need one wicket to win at the Gabba, with Australia just 20 runs shy of their target. The conclusion of that match is live right now over on TNT Sports 2.

India 32-0 (Rohit 22, Jaiswal 9) Overs: 9

India require 199 more runs to win

Rohit punishes a full toss from Root, lacing it away for four through mid-off.

That brings the required score down under 200, and India will be pretty happy with this start. They are favourites from this position for sure.

India 27-0 (Rohit 18, Jaiswal 8) Overs: 8

India require 204 more runs to win

Much better from Hartley so far in this innings. Two singles come from the over.

India 25-0 (Rohit 17, Jaiswal 7) Overs: 7

India require 206 more runs to win

Root is bowling nicely and gets through a decent over that goes for just the one single, flicked by Rohit into the leg side.

India 24-0 (Rohit 16, Jaiswal 7) Overs: 6

India require 207 more runs to win

England do review this time as Hartley traps Jaiswal on the pads. The original decision is not out and is it turning too much? DRS says yes it was missing leg and England lose a review.

Stokes looks to the sky – he won’t want to end up in a situation like the first innings where he burns through all three reviews early. That was a reasonable shout in fairness.

Two runs come from the over.

India 22-0 (Rohit 15, Jaiswal 6) Overs: 5

India require 209 more runs to win

Root is swept to the rope as Jaiswal gets underway. He was brutal with his assault in India’s first innings, but the opener is under a different sort of pressure here.

India 17-0 (Rohit 15, Jaiswal 1) Overs: 4

India require 214 more runs to win

Stokes is always proactive, and he brings Tom Hartley into the attack after just the one over from Wood.

Can the left-armer find his groove after a tricky showing in India’s first innings? He’ll certainly take confidence from how keen his captain is to get him into the attack.

He starts with a tidy over that goes for two singles.

India 15-0 (Rohit 14, Jaiswal 0) Overs: 3

India require 216 more runs to win

Root hasn’t quite got his line right so far, and Rohit punishes a full toss with a beautiful punch drive for four.

England’s field is quite interesting here, with a few men back on the left side, presumably with half an eye on the runs. It’s giving a bit of protection for the spinners while also ensuring there are catching options.

England appeal as Root cracks Jaiswal on the pads, but Stokes opts against the review and that looks like a wise call, with the ball likely sliding down leg.

CHANCE! India 10-0 (Rohit 9, Jaiswal 0) Overs: 2

India require 221 more runs to win

Mark Wood gets the new ball as England go in search of the early wickets they need to really put the pressure on India.

And Wood holds his head in hands as an outside edge off Rohit’s bat gives a chance to Crawley at second slip, but he can’t get hands to one that reaches him very low. It was a tricky opportunity, but could and maybe should have been taken.

The ball races away to the boundary to mean it’s quite an expensive over.

England are currently without Jack Leach on the field, which isn’t a particularly positive indication that he’s going to be fit to bowl many overs in this innings. He did come out to bat but wasn’t moving massively freely, so let’s see what happens.

India 1-0 (Rohit 1, Jaiswal 0) Overs: 1

India require 230 more runs to win

The players are back out in the middle after lunch and we’re all set for this fourth innings. India require 231 to win, with England needing ten wickets.

Can these openers get India off to a fast start? How fit is Jack Leach? It’s going to be fascinating.

Joe Root takes the new ball after being the stand-out performer with the ball for England in the first innings, and he gets a bit of action late on, catching the inside edge of Jaiswal that cannons into the pads, and then getting one to lift off a length. Good signs for England.

A thriller elsewhere on TNT Sports

It’s going down to the wire at the Gabba, with coverage over on TNT Sports 2.

West Indies have Australia eight down, thanks to a sensational spell from Shamar Joseph, who has picked up six wickets while bowling with a broken toe.

The Aussies need 30 runs to win and West Indies require two wickets. Tune in now to watch the action on TNT Sports 2 and discovery+

The story of the morning session

India (436) trail England (246 and 420) by 230 runs

We have a game on in Hyderabad.

England resumed on 316-6 and added 104 runs in a morning session that saw Ollie Pope dominate the India bowling attack, departing for a brilliant 196 to end England’s innings.

The tourists were finally all out for 420, having been 163-5, with Pope the only batter to pass 50.

Jasprit Bumrah finished with the pick of the figures (4-41), with Ravichandran Ashwin taking 3-126, Ravindra Jadeja 2-131 and Axar Patel 1-74.

Mohammed Siraj finished wicketless from his seven overs, but should have had a wicket when KL Rahul put down a relatively straightforward chance in the slips with Pope on 186.

Pope was the controlling force in the first session, putting on decent partnerships with Rehan Ahmed (28) and Tom Hartley (34) to help England build a 230-run lead and give them a sniff of a chance in the fourth innings.

But the session ended with a flurry of wickets as Hartley and Mark Wood (0) fell in quick succession. And the magnificent Pope was the last man to go for 196, going on the attack with a hobbling Jack Leach at the other end and falling four runs short of his double hundred.

He deserved his milestone, but 196 on this surface is a sensational knock from Pope, and one that will live long in the memory.

India’s openers will start up after lunch with the target set at 231.

You’d still back the home side to win it from here, particularly with them batting all the way down to number nine. But England have a chance, and that is impressive in itself given how far behind they were in the game after day two.

WICKET! England 420 all out Overs: 102.1

Ollie Pope bowled by Jasprit Bumrah for 196 (278b)

Jack Leach arrived at the ground with his knee encased in medical strapping. He comes out to the middle, but it’s questionable how much he’s going to be able to do here, and India respond by bringing Bumrah straight back into the attack.

Pope knows he doesn’t have much in the way of support and goes on the attack, looking for his double hundred. But he misses with a reverse flick and a full ball from Bumrah cleans him up for 196.

Pope grimaces as he misses out on 200, but that has been a stunning knock. India’s players to a man come over to congratulate him.

Those last three wickets have come in a hurry, but England will be very pleased with their efforts this morning, building a lead of 230 and leaving them with a chance of doing something special in the fourth innings.

That wicket means it’s time for lunch.

WICKET! England 420-9 (Pope 196) Overs: 102

Mark Wood caught by KS Bharat bowled Ravindra Jadeja for 0 (7b)

India review as Jadeja launches an appeal for lbw against Pope. It doesn’t look great though, and DRS says it’s umpire’s call on line and missing the stumps in any case. That leaves India with one review remaining.

But Jadeja gets the ball to talk late in the over, picking up the ninth wicket with the final ball as he lures Wood forward and finds the edge. It’s well caught by Bharat and Wood doesn’t even wait for the umpire, walking straight off.

WICKET! England 419-8 (Pope 195, Wood 0) Overs: 101

Tom Hartley bowled by Ravichandran Ashwin for 34 (52b)

Ashwin makes the breakthrough with a ball that keeps incredibly low and scoots through the defences of Hartley to crash into the stumps.

It’s a welcome wicket for India, but they won’t be massively happy about how that ball behaved.

Hartley has to depart for 34, having played an important role this morning, putting on a partnership worth 80 runs with Pope.

Mark Wood is the new batter and he plays out the over. It’s a wicket-maiden for Ashwin.

England 419-7 (Pope 195, Hartley 34) Overs: 100

Axar Patel comes into the attack for the first time today.

But another gem of a shot from Pope sees him go for runs, as the England centurion drives him beautifully for four. I know people compare Pope to Ian Bell, but it’s hard not to make the comparison with shots like that, which was peak Bell.

Six runs come from the over.

England 413-7 (Pope 191, Hartley 33) Overs: 99

England are going after Siraj a little, and he’s bending his back to try and get as much out of the pitch as possible. Pope looks to pull him away and mistimes it, with the ball flying safe behind square off the thigh pad.

Hartley plays out the rest of the over.

England 412-7 (Pope 191, Hartley 33) Overs: 98

Hartley reverse-sweeps Ashwin for four and India are beginning to look a little unsettled by this England effort.

The lead is 222, and that target is beginning to reach the sort of size that could cause India some issues.

England 405-7 (Pope 189, Hartley 29) Overs: 97

This hasn’t been the gung-ho sort of effort that you might expect from Bazball-era England. In fact it’s been a calm and composed accumulation of runs this morning, but they are still scoring at a very decent rate, up around five-an-over.

Hartley doesn’t improve Siraj’s mood as he loosely pulls into the gap for four to start the over. And he plays out the rest of the over comfortably enough.

England 401-7 (Pope 189, Hartley 24) Overs: 96

Huge applause from the travelling England fans, and a hint of a trumpet too, as they celebrate a single from Pope that brings up the 400.

This is a decent pitch for batting, but to put this England effort into context, this is the first time a team has scored 400 in the third innings of a Test in this country in 12 years.

Four singles come from Ashwin’s over.

DROP! England 397-7 (Pope 187, Hartley 22) Overs: 95

Pope leans into a full ball from Siraj and sends it racing away for a beautiful four. That is a lovely shot.

But the England man gets a huge let-off next up, as he attempts a fine cut to a ball that comes back in on him, and he edges it to Rahul at slip… who grasses it! It did dip on the fielder, but that’s a catch that really should be taken.

Pope misses a pull shot next ball, and Siraj hurls the loose ball through to the keeper past the batter’s head. He’s absolutely fuming about that drop.

Siraj finishes the over by sending a bouncer in towards Hartley, who defends it well, and there are some words from the bowler as he comes down the wicket at the end of the over. England won’t mind that too much, it’s more a show of frustration than anything.

England 390-7 (Pope 180, Hartley 22) Overs: 94

The players have had drinks and Ashwin continues.

England knock a couple of singles and that takes the lead up to 200. What an effort this has been from the tourists! It might not be a winning effort, we’ll find out later in the match, but it’s been a brave response to a tricky start to the series.

Two runs come from the over.

  • TNT Sports will broadcast England’s tour of India, currently scheduled for January-February 2028.

Big action elsewhere

Elsewhere on TNT Sports, West Indies are right in the mix against Australia at the Gabba, with Shamar Joseph taking two in two to leave the Aussies four down in their fourth-innings chase.

You can also watch that match live on TNT Sports and discovery+ right now if you so wish.

England 388-7 (Pope 179, Hartley 21) Overs: 93

This is going to be interesting. Siraj gets a rare go with the ball, having only sent down seven overs in the match to this point. Will England go after him? Or could this be a masterstroke from Rohit?

He’s not had much joy in this Test, but Siraj is typically a go-to bowler for India when they need something to happen.

He holds his head in his hands as Pope inside-edges onto his pads midway through the over. Pope tries to chop him away for a couple of fine cuts, but doesn’t execute either, and Siraj’s face suggests he feels the edge is well in play, with two slips in.

England 385-7 (Pope 177, Hartley 20) Overs: 92

Hartley drives again and it’s well-fielded on the rope to limit England to three.

A reasonably expensive over concludes when Ashwin gets one to lift off a length, and it catches everyone by surprise, beating the keeper and slip-fielder to run away for four byes.

England 375-7 (Pope 175, Hartley 16) Overs: 91

Hartley shows off his class, skipping down the wicket and hammering Jadeja for a one-bounce four.

England will be delighted with how he’s playing here, although the ease with which he’s started is a reminder that it’s going to take some effort to pick up ten Indian wickets, particularly with their batting line-up being so deep.

England 369-7 (Pope 174, Hartley 11) Overs: 90

England keep things ticking over as Ashwin’s first over with the new ball goes for three singles.

England 366-7 (Pope 173, Hartley 9) Overs: 89

That confident shot from Hartley has persuaded India to take the new ball. It’s going to be a really significant spell of the game now. Can India get this fresh cherry talking, or will England kick on?

Hartley manages to get off strike to the first ball of Jadeja’s over, which wasn’t the plan.

And there are a few grimaces in the field as Pope rolls out the scoop late in the over, flicking a full ball over his own head and running it away for four. That’s a lovely shot.

England 361-7 (Pope 169, Hartley 8) Overs: 88

India are sticking with the old ball, perhaps concerned that a shiny new one could race away for some quick runs for England. The bowlers are getting plenty out of the current one in any case.

Pope and Hartley rotate the strike through Ashwin’s over until the latter skips down the track and launches India’s premier spinner back over his head for four. He follows it up with a confident sweep for a single. England will be pretty happy with how the morning has gone so far.

England 353-7 (Pope 167, Hartley 2) Overs: 87

Bumrah got the breakthrough with the old ball and is given a rest after his fiery spell to start the day, and it’s a change of ends for Jadeja.

He gets one to fizz out of the rough that narrowly evades the edge of Pope and bisects Bharat and Rohit behind the stumps too, giving England a bye.

There’s an umpire review later in the over as Pope pushes forward and Bharat whips off the bails, but he managed to get his back foot down and the England centurion continues.

England 350-7 (Pope 166, Hartley 2) Overs: 86

It’s time for some Ashwin, and he starts by pulling out of his action. Mind games against Pope perhaps? Or was he checking the non-striker’s position? Either way, Ashwin looks in the mood.

He’s doing all sorts already, is Ashwin, trying a delay to his bowling action on occasion and moving the field around plenty, particularly when he manages to get Hartley on strike late in the over.

England 347-7 (Pope 163, Hartley 2) Overs: 85

Bumrah continues, with this old ball reversing for him. After an early single for Pope, it’s Hartley on strike against one of the most dangerous fast bowlers in the world, and he almost falls to a worldy of a yorker, that reverses in toward his toes at pace, but the left-armer keeps it out.

Hartley does well to get through the over unscathed, finishing off with a confident drive that yields no run but shows that he is no mug with the bat. His ability to lengthen the batting is one of the reasons England were so keen to pick him.

England 346-7 (Pope 162, Hartley 2) Overs: 84

India have been happy enough to give Pope singles this morning, and they do so again to get Hartley on strike against Jadeja. That brings up the 150 lead for England.

It’s going to need something special from England with the ball to win this game from the current position, but they’re in the match, and that deserves enormous praise considering the state of the game after day two.

There’s a brief scare for England as a stuttering quick single has Hartley racing for his ground after a reverse-sweep from Pope.

Pope edges the last ball of the over, but it runs into the outfield and England scamper for three.

WICKET! England 338-7 (Pope 157, Hartley 0) Overs: 83

Rehan Ahmed caught by KS Bharat bowled Jasprit Bumrah for 28 (53b)

The decision to stick with the old ball reaps rewards as Bumrah gets some movement out of it, finding the edge of Rehan with consecutive deliveries.

The first drops short of slip, but the second flies through to the keeper and Rehan has to go, prodding at a reverse swinging delivery and paying the price.

India will be hoping to rattle through the tail now. Tom Hartley is the new batter in at number nine.

England 338-6 (Pope 157, Rehan 28) Overs: 82

Rehan has plenty of quality with the bat in hand, and his eyes light up as Jadeja floats one up. The ball flies back over the bowler’s head and races away for four, beating Ashwin in the outfield.

A couple of huge turners finish off the over, with India temporarily interested in a review for an edge off the last ball. Rohit wisely opts against it.

England 333-6 (Pope 156, Rehan 24) Overs: 81

Intriguingly, India opt against taking the new ball. Bumrah continues and is tucked away for a beautiful late cut from Pope that races to the boundary.

There’s a little moment in the middle of the over as the batter and bowler knock shoulders as Pope runs for a leg bye. He isn’t happy, but both Bumrah and Rohit apologise.

England 327-6 (Pope 152, Rehan 23) Overs: 80

It’s another over for Jadeja and he rattles through it, finishing off with a muted appeal for lbw against Pope that was never doing anything.

150! England 324-6 (Pope 152, Rehan 20) Overs: 79

The new ball is rapidly approaching, and India get Bumrah loose with a first over of the day. Not that it takes Bumrah long to get up and running – he hits 93mph with just his second ball of the day!

Pope manages to knock that away for a single and that’s his 150. What a knock!

Rehan does well to get through the over, almost finding the boundary with a drive that yields three runs.

England 318-6 (Pope 149, Rehan 17) Overs: 78

Jadeja starts the day with a stiff looking first over. There’s a scare last up for Rehan as a big turner forces him to lose his balance and Bharat whips off the bails, but he’s safe and England are up and running.

04:00 – Can England set a challenging target?

Here we go then, the players are out in the middle and we’re all set for play at the start of this fourth day in Hyderabad.

The lead is 126, which won’t concern India too much just yet. But if England can stick in for a while this morning then we could have a classic on our hands.

Remember that a new ball is just three overs away, and with Jasprit Bumrah in the India attack that is a fearsome prospect for a fragile England tail.

03:55 – The story of day three

England (246 and 316-6) lead India (436) by 126 runs

Most people would have expected this Test to be over by now, but England have done a magnificent job to take it to a fourth day, and still have an outside chance of winning it after what was a superb effort on day three.

Ollie Pope will resume unbeaten on 148* – an innings that is not just the best of his Test career so far, but one that also gives England plenty of encouragement for the remainder of the series. To score a century of such quality against an attack this good is a phenomenal effort, and he’s dragged England back into the match.

Pope was the undoubted star of Saturday’s play, but there were also notable contributions from the two openers, with Zak Crawley (31) and Ben Duckett (47) getting England off to a trademark fast start.

And Ben Foakes deserves immense credit for his gutsy 34, which formed part of a 112-run partnership that boosted England into the lead.

Rehan Ahmed will resume on 16* alongside Pope, with England on 316-6 and leading by 126.

03:50 – Hello and welcome

Good morning to all you early risers/night owls and welcome to live coverage of this fourth day of the first Test between India and England in Hyderabad. I’m Tom Bennett and I’ll be bringing you over-by-over coverage of the action throughout this Sunday morning.

Root salutes Pope after ‘absolute masterclass’

Ollie Pope helped England turn around their huge deficit on day three, and was praised afterwards by team-mate Joe Root, who knows a thing or two about batting on the sub-continent.

“The way that Pope has played in particular has been an absolute masterclass on how to score runs in this part of the world,” Root said.

“When you’re not used to playing here time and time again, and you only get the odd Tour here and there, to be able to consistently make the right decision, under pressure, in big moments and big games, and off the back of everything that he’s been through.

“Coming back from a serious injury, out for a long time. As vice captain to stand up and play an innings like that is truly phenomenal.”
