What a remarkable morning of cricket, all set in motion with the most brilliant innings from Yashasvi Jaiswal. 214 not out from the young opener, supported first by Shibman Gill, then a strong 68 from 72 balls by Sarfaraz Khan. The total set was too much even for Bazball era England, but it didn’t look impossible until it was. Tight, aggressive bowling from India prevented England’s openers from settling, and then falling to a most unfortunate run-out. They kept defending but once the name batters were gone, so was all hope at surviving let alone saving the test. Mark Wood had fun at the end. 2-1 down after three, England must now regroup and find their way back into this series.
Wicket! India win by 434 runs!
The hero with the bat is the hero in the field. Mark Wood was always going to go down swinging and he miscues a big one into the deep which Jaiswal does well to run across and claim. Well taken young man. Jadeja finishes with a fivefer, and India have their biggest victory by runs.
England suffer double blow as Root and Stokes fall in succession
England 120-9 (Wood 31, Anderson 1) Overs: 39
Anderson off the mark thanks to a prod to midwicket, as Mark Wood continues to hurl his bat at anything that moves. This might end up being an even bigger partnership than the last one if he keeps slapping away like this.
England 114-9 (Wood 26, Anderson 0) Overs: 38
100 up for England, which is… something. It comes via four leg byes, which probably should have been given. Mark Wood is playing some big big shots, dispatching Jadeja thrice for four and once for a maximum in that over, right over the bowlers head. Bazball is back, albeit briefly. Jadeja almost has the final wicket of the day, with the finger going up but it’s a successfl review for England, the replay showing it pitched outside leg.
England 91-9 (Wood 9, Anderson 0) Overs: 37
The ball is turning like a top for Ashwin, who almost polishes England off with a caught behind but Jimmy’s bat wasn’t even close to it. England are going to go down swinging and no mistake.
Wicket! Hartley b Ashwin 16
Ashwin opens his account as Alex Hartley plays onto his stumps. Back to the pavilion he goes, mere minutes after Mark Wood emerged from it.
England 91-8 (Wood 8, Hartley 16) Overs: 36
I had been about to ask if England’s batters squeeze this one out? They can’t. Mark Wood can show why he’s got such a high average for a bowler, opening his account first with a drive through the covers and a slog sweep to double his money.
Wicket! Foakes c Jurel b Jadeja 16
That’s the one India wanted. Beautiful bowling from Jadeja as Foakes tries the cut but instead serves up the thickest of edges to the wicketkeeper. Not an easy catch but Jurel clings to it for all he’s worth.
England 82-7 (Foakes 16, Hartley 16) Overs: 35
The ball is back in the dangerous right hand of Kuldeep Yadav, who gives away a single to Ben Foakes. Rohit is heard on the pitch saying if they take another wicket this evening the match will be extended by half an hour. Hartley seems to respond by dispatching Kuldeep for four runs through the covers. Six overs left as things stand.
England 77-7 (Foakes 15, Hartley 12) Overs: 34
An excited India want to have this one done today, and are appealing absolutely everything. No law against that, but that was definitely caught off thigh pad not bat or glove. A slap from Hartley to mid-off is nothing for nobody. 27 the partnership.
England 76-7 (Foakes 14, Hartley 12) Overs: 33
Some fine bowling from Kuldeep serves up a lovely take from the wicketkeeper to a Hartley sweep. Umpire Dharmaseena says the sound was bat on ground and there’s no reviews left. Good cricket nontheless. One more run to England as they’re looking to survive the remaining overs of the day.
An interesting shot choice from Rehan Ahmed
England 75-7 (Foakes 13, Hartley 12) Overs: 32
India review for caught behind from the third ball of the over, because Jurel thought he heard a noise, but it’s a flat line on ultraedge all the way through. India have no more reviews left. Still a maiden for Ashwin.
England 75-7 (Foakes 13, Hartley 12) Overs: 31
After giving up a few runs in his previous over, it’s as you were from Kuldeep, who has his eyes on the prize and no mistake. At his loosest he’s only giving up singles and even then it’s because he’s trying to tempt the batters onto the front foot.
England 73-7 (Foakes 12, Hartley 11) Overs: 30
Alex Hartley off the mark in style with a huge hit over long on for SIX. He then whack Ashwin for four in the next ball to go into double figures himself. The 23 run partnership is the highest of this innings.
England 61-7 (Foakes 11, Hartley 0) Overs: 29
Foakes really can bat, moving into double figures with two boundaries in a row off Kuldeep thanks to some fine footwork. He almost falls lbw with a reasonable review from Sharma, but the ball was pitching outside the line.
England 53-7 (Foakes 3, Hartley 0) Overs: 28
Our first sight of Ashwin into the attack, after his return home to see his mother. It’s like he never left, almost tempting Hartley but has to settle for a maiden of his own.
Duckett low blow
England 53-7 (Foakes 3, Hartley 0) Overs: 27
Foakes just looking to perform now, and see what he can do. What he can do is stride forward and poke his bat in the direction of the gap in extra cover. A good couple of runs there, as he moves onto three. Five dot balls and, well, things, could be worse for England.
England 51-7 (Foakes 1, Hartley 0) Overs: 26
Foakes gets off the mark thanks to a misfield at point. He might have got the run anyway, I suppose. This is forlorn for England but when India’s bowling is as good as their batting, and no luck is coming the tourists’ way, all you can do is admire it.
England 50-7 (Foakes 0, Hartley 0) Overs: 25
A second consecutive wicket maiden for Kuldeep. Is there a stat for that? Can’t be common. England are truly on the ropes.
Wicket! Rehan c Siraj b Kuldeep 0
Credit to Rohit Sharma for his fielding positions. Rehan Ahmed goes for a big one down long on, but instead of flying into the stands it falls down the throat of Mohammed Siraj a few metres in front of the rope.
‘Sharp catch’ – Rohit pounces Pope at slip off Jadeja
England 50-6 (Foakes 0, Rehan 0) Overs: 24
No respite for the batters, as Jadeja has missile lock on the stumps. A tight field and he gives nothing away for a third maiden. Nevermind boundaries, singles would be nice for England at this point.
England 50-6 (Foakes 0, Rehan 0) Overs: 23
Rehan survives the final ball of the over for a wicket maiden for Kuldeep. Smiles all-round in the India camp.
Wicket! Stokes lbw b Kuldeep 15
Stokes out sweeping this time. England review, because they have to, but if ever a player’s body language said he knew he was out, it was Stokes’ hanging head. Spot on from everyone involved except the England captain.
England 50-5 (Foakes 0, Stokes 15) Overs: 22
Dire straits for England. That short partnership comes to an end and it’s hard to see where England can go from here. Jadeja had the bit between his teeth and moves onto 3-10. Astonishing figures in test cricket.
Wicket! Root lbw b Jadeja 7
Jadeja gets Joe Root for the seventh time. His disappointing series continues, as he swept and missed. The finger went up, and although Root reviewed, DRS showed the ball would have gone on to clip off stump.
England 50-4 (Root 7, Stokes 15) Overs: 21
Are England playing for the draw? At this stage if they play for the win, they’re almost guaranteed to lose wickets. The percentages are low either way, but maybe marginally higher to see the time out. Kuldeep’s first over is uneventful except for a ball that Root tries to sweep but which goes through his legs. Good covering from the wicketkeeper.
England 49-4 (Root 6, Stokes 15) Overs: 20
Jadeja, with figures of 2-10 from six, comes back to the hunt. He doesn’t add a wicket but does pick up another maiden, with delicious bowling, all of them full or good and with no room for Stokes to do anything to them.
England 49-4 (Root 6, Stokes 15) Overs: 19
That’s the kind of ball Ben Stokes wants to see, as Siraj sends one up to him far too straight, and at the perfect height for him to send all the way to the square leg boundary. It’s looking very breezy out there, at least from the flags. Nice batting conditions you’d think. Stokes almost picks up another four but has to settle for running three, as Patidar at midwicket makes the dive and rescues the run. Fine fielding, rightly applauded by his captain.
England 42-4 (Root 6, Stokes 7) Overs: 18
Another tight-as-you-like over of bowling from Jadeja, giving up just the single. You have to give these two batters some credit, though, for resisting their natural instincts. They will start batting, but they can’t afford to yet.
England 41-4 (Root 6, Stokes 7) Overs: 17
Siraj comes in for his fourth over and Jadeja almost takes the catch, but they’re better off telling themselves it didn’t pick up the edge, and didn’t carry. It did though. A first maiden for Siraj, which is four for India in this Innings.
‘Slightly embarrassing’ – Cook on Jaiswal hitting more sixes in an innings than in his entire career

‘Slightly embarrassing’ – Cook on Jaiswal hitting more sixes in an innings than in his Test career
England 41-4 (Root 6, Stokes 7) Overs: 16
Bazball is understandably out of the window, as England are really obliged to play defensively against what is perhaps the best bowling we’ve witnessed in this series. A good drive from Stokes to extra cover adds on another couple.
England 38-4 (Root 5, Stokes 5) Overs: 15
Bumrah races in with a little too much enthusiasm, overstepping and giving up a no-ball. India can certainly afford it. It’s about damage limitation for England, and avoiding a humiliating defeat. Psychologically, for the series more than this match, these two both need to get themselves in here. More chances for India, though, including a Stokes edge that just falls short of second slip. Stokes also gets away with another late withdrawal, such that if it had hit the stumps he’d have been given out. England pick up four byes with a ball that Jurel can’t even get close to.
England 33-4 (Root 5, Stokes 5) Overs: 14
Jadeja enjoying himself, and fancies a third wicket but he has to settle for conceding just a single run. The Indian ship is steady, England’s is rocking on high seas.
Crawley given out lbw to Bumrah in third test
England 32-4 (Root 5, Stokes 4) Overs: 13
How can England recover from here? These are two very good batters but they need a three hundred run partnership at least. India just need 150% of the wickets they’ve already taken. The stumps are down but only because Stokes vacated his crease before Bumrah bowled. Something distracted the England captain at the sightscreen. He picks up three runs from the next ball, a flick past square leg with some good fielding preventing the boundary.
England 29-4 (Root 5, Stokes 1) Overs: 12
And almost another lbw for India. They offer a big appeal, and Rohit reviews, but ball tracking shows the impact was outside off-stump. Stokes survives for now.
Wicket! Bairstow lbw b Jadeja 4
Bairstow goes to sweep, misses completely and the umpire has no hesitation in raising the finger. Bairstow knows it’s good, so does Root who tells him to keep walking. The replay shows that it would have gone on to clip off stump.
England 24-3 (Root 1, Bairstow 4) Overs: 11
Joe Root picks up his first boundary of the innings off Bumrah. Just… a lot more of them required.
England 24-3 (Root 1, Bairstow 4) Overs: 10
A big innings needed from Jonny Bairstow and he’s off the mark thanks to a fortuitous boundary, after a misfield from Siraj.
Wicket! Pope c Sharma b Jadeja 3
What a catch from Rohit Sharma at first slip. Pope tried to play the square cut but gets a thick edge. The Indian skipper adjusted his feet well to take it cleanly to his left.
England 20-2 (Root 1, Pope 3) Overs: 9
A lot of pressure on Joe Root then, and immediately an lbw shout but the umpire thinks there was bat on it. Ultra edge confirms. Almost another run-out from the final ball of the over as Rohit throws under-arm at the nons-strikers end but needs the direct hit, which doesn’t come.
‘Complete miscommunication’ – Duckett run-out after mix-up with Zak Crawley
Tea – England 18-2
No point a batter coming out for three balls so that’s tea. England are in big big trouble, with a mountain to climb. PIck your imagery, but one thing is for sure, both openers are gone before the final session.
Wicket! Crawley lbw b Bumrah 11
The ball from Bumrah brushes Crawley’s front pad, then hits him on the back pad. A big shout from India and a short wait but the finger goes up. England review and though it looks high the replay shows it would have just about clipped leg stump.
‘Seeing it like a beachball’ – Jaiswal hits a hattrick of sixes off Anderson
England 18-1 (Crawley 11, Pope 2) Overs: 8
All eyes on Ollie Pope as Jadeja is brought in for his first over of the session. A very tight field is set and Jadeja gets himself going with a maiden.
England 18-1 (Crawley 11, Pope 2) Overs: 7
Pope off the mark first ball and another single from the final shot of the over. We’ll bring you the replay of that run-out as soon as we can, because you’ll want to see that one. Some debate over who gets the credit, Siraj or Jurel, but the scorers have given it to the fielder.
Wicket! Duckett run-out.
The first ball of the over brings about a complete mix-up from England as Duckett finds himself stranded and desperately running back to his crease but no avail. Great glovework from Jurel to glide in on his knees, away from the stumps and pass the ball back to take off the bails. That’s the last thing England will have wanted and Duckett will be kicking himself. Great pick-up from Siraj as well.
England 15-0 (Crawley 11, Duckett 4) Overs: 6
Siraj to Duckett and another couple for Duckett, who taps it behind square. He’s not quite motoring but the engine is on. If that isn’t a very confused metaphor. Soft hands from Zak Crawley earns two for him as well.
England 10-0 (Crawley 9, Duckett 1) Overs: 5
Good balls are being treated with respect by these batters, who are looking to see out the new ball. The fast bowlers haven’t given them anything either, pinging them at the stumps. Bumrah bowling good balls, and one which Duckett didn’t like at all, bouncing up into the most uncomfortable area. Duckett needs a minute and while the physio has come out, there’s not much he can do there. Finally Duckett is off the mark after twelve balls.
England 9-0 (Crawley 9, Duckett 0) Overs: 4
More runs for England on the on-side, with Crawley using his height to sweep in front of square to pick up another tasty four off Siraj. Will India be thinking of bringing in the spinners early? The ball doesn’t seem to be swinging much, although it’s still pretty new.
England 5-0 (Crawley 5, Duckett 0) Overs: 3
Two slips in place for Bumrah means there’ll be no easy runs for England here. They’re off the mark with a boundary for Crawley thanks to a cover drive between mid-wicket and fine leg.
England 0-0 (Crawley 0, Duckett 0) Overs: 2
Mohammed Siraj to share the attack, and it’s an interesting field, with a slip, a gulley, a short mid-wicket. Sharma is anticipating the Ben Duckett sweep and wants to limit its effects. Good bowling from Siraj into the body, very very tight, coming into the left hander. An opportunity for a run but it’s saved thanks to a dive at short midwicket. Two maidens on the trott, and a cautious start from England.
England 0-0 (Crawley 0, Duckett 0) Overs: 1
Here we go then. Englands openers are padded up, and they know what they have to do. It’s unlikely but if anyone can do it. Jasprit Bumrah comes into Zak Crawley as the barmy army trumpet launches into Jerusalem. Crawley is in no rush to get off the mark, and lets a couple of balls sail past, while giving two others a tentative tap, and mistiming one towards cover. A maiden to open for Bumrah.
Yashsavi Jaiswal – Remember the name
A moment of mirth
Declaration! India set England a target of 557 runs.
What a display of batting from this pair in that session. A partnership of 172 runs from 158 balls, with 116 of them coming since lunch. That’s certainly woken me up, I don’t know about anyone else. This is going to be the biggest bazball test to date for England.
India 430-4 (Jaiswal 214, Sarfaraz 68) Overs: 98
India lead England (319 all out) by 556 runs
It continues with Sarfaraz at the crease and Rehan running down towards him. It’s all entertainment as Sarfaraz shows anything Jaiswal can do, he can do, hitting first a six over square leg, then a four through extra cover, and another maximum with a stunning slog sweep from one knee.
The batters think they’ve declared
Goals reached, they’re walking off and removing gloves, but Rohit Sharma flaps his arms and instructs them back to their creases. He’s not done yet.
India 412-4 (Jaiswal 213, Sarfaraz 51) Overs: 97
India lead England (319 all out) by 538 runs
There it is! A roar from Jaiswal, the helmet comes off and an ovation from all in the ground. 200 off just 231 balls. What. A. Player. After that milestone is secured he plays what might be his biggest six of the match over long off, before repeating the trick with the very next ball on the opposite side. That equals the world record of 12 in a test innings. Can he break it? Might as well let him try, surely? First, drinks.
India 397-4 (Jaiswal 199, Sarfaraz 50) Overs: 96
India lead England (319 all out) by 523 runs
Two milestones approaching fast, and the first comes to Sarfaraz after three balls when he’s pegged to his crease by Rehan. His second 50 on his debut is sealed with a soft tap off the back foot. He gets a hug from Jaiswal who will get his turn in the next over.
India 395-4 (Jaiswal 198, Sarfaraz 49) Overs: 95
India lead England (319 all out) by 521 runs
Great fielding from Ollie Pope who prevents Jaiswal from getting the four and his double ton, after latching onto a full toss. Jaiswal will have to keep waiting as Sarfaraz denies him the run off the next ball, and then does run the next shot to stay on strike at the end of the over.
India 393-4 (Jaiswal 197, Sarfaraz 48) Overs: 94
India lead England (319 all out) by 519 runs
Jaiswal has the steeliest of gazes as he moves onto 196 with a single to long on. Rehan is trying to find the rough and get a bit of glove on it. Sarfaraz is enjoying his batting now and is a bit miffed that Jaiswal doesn’t come back for a second run when he’s calling for it.
India 390-4 (Jaiswal 195, Sarfaraz 47) Overs: 93
India lead England (319 all out) by 516 runs
Root overpitches with the first ball of the over, which Sarfaraz doesn’t need telling twice, hitting it on the full straight over the head of his team-mate. He gets into the 40s on his next ball, another four runs with a slog past two fielders on the leg side. The declaration is looking closer, you’d say.
India 380-4 (Jaiswal 195, Sarfaraz 39) Overs: 92
India lead England (319 all out) by 506 runs
Rehan frustrating the batters a bit in that over, as they want to play shots but the bowler is keeping it tight. A replay from the previous over confirms a dropped catch from Joe Root, but no way an easy one.
India 376-4 (Jaiswal 193, Sarfaraz 38) Overs: 91
India lead England (319 all out) by 502 runs
Joe Root looking to bowl into the rough, and invite the shots towards the field, which is packed on the leg side, but neither batter is being fooled into doing anything silly. Khan tries the drive but the bowler gets onto it. It looked like a painful pickup but he couldn’t keep two hands under it. Just two off that over.
India 374-4 (Jaiswal 192, Sarfaraz 37) Overs: 90
India lead England (319 all out) by 500 runs
Medical staff have a chat with Jaiswal and give him a drink, presumably questioning how long he wants to keep going for. At least another ten runs, you’d think. Two each for the batters off a solid Rehan over takes the lead to 500.
India 370-4 (Jaiswal 190, Sarfaraz 35) Overs: 89
India lead England (319 all out) by 496 runs
India having fun in the sun, and England are just doing all they can to slow things down. In a previous era India would have declared by now, but you can never be sure with bazball. The ball is back in the hands of Joe Root, bowling fairly full, as Jaiswal and Khan are content to pick up the singles, and add five to the total.
India 365-4 (Jaiswal 187, Sarfaraz 34) Overs: 88
India lead England (319 all out) by 491 runs
A catch results in an appeal from Ben Foakes, is given not out but raises enough of a question and they call for the replay. It looks like glove more than bat but ultraedge shows a glance of arm at absolute most. Good decision from the on-field umpire but England have now lost all their reviews, though that’s the least of their worries. Good bowling from Rehan who keeps Jaiswal in his crease as India only add two, far less than the average for the session. 51 so far in the six overs, means 8.5 per over.
India 363-4 (Jaiswal 186, Sarfaraz 33) Overs: 87
India lead England (319 all out) by 489 runs
Jimmy Anderson continues, and India continue to put him to the sword, with Khan flicking him for four first ball through square. This is what we were expecting India to deliver and they haven’t disappointed. Best for the barmy army to just enjoy the shotsmanship now, knowing that England will have to come out and all-or-nothing it. It’s going to be exciting for the duration of India’s innings and then when England come out it can only go one of two ways. Another four for Jaiswal who just opens the bat and nodding the bat to the backward boundary. He can do it all.
India 354-4 (Jaiswal 182, Sarfaraz 28) Overs: 86
India lead England (319 all out) by 480 runs
The Mumbai school of batting is teaching a masterclass this morning but they almost come unstuck when Sarfarwaz gets a bit too underneath one, offering hope for the field, but it falls safely between two men. A relatively slower over to England’s small relief, with just the four singles off it.
India 350-4 (Jaiswal 180, Sarfaraz 26) Overs: 85
India lead England (319 all out) by 476 runs
Back with Jimmy A. The second ball is a yorker, which Jaiswal anticipates perfectly, sending it all the way over fine leg for his eighth 6 of the innings. His ninth and tenth come o the next two balls, as he gets the hattrick to the despair of the bowler. Big hitting from a big batter brimming with confidence. He’s limited to two for the fifth ball of the over, as England are in panic stations. A single brings up 350 for India who are motoring, with Jaiswal already nearer 200 than 150.
India 329-4 (Jaiswal 159, Sarfaraz 26) Overs: 84
India lead England (319 all out) by 455 runs
Rehan Ahmed in from the other end, and his first ball is saved from going all the way by a tremendous dive from the old man Anderson, so the batters have to run four. A couple more dots before Jaiswal latches onto an overpitched full toss and belting it through the covers.
India 321-4 (Jaiswal 154, Sarfaraz 23) Overs: 83
India lead England (319 all out) by 447 runs
Back out after lunch and Jimmy Anderson still with the old ball in his hand. Jaiswas takes a march down the pitch and takes a swing at the first pitch, but it’s only nudged to point. After Jimmy bowls a wide, Jaiswal brings up his 150 with the second third ball of the over, a soft handed pat to backward point. The crowd like that, and they appreciate this young batter, who raises his equipment to take in the applause. He keeps marching with a smoking four run ramp to the short ball, even while toppling over. That’s 2020 heritage that.
How much longer will India bat?
Speculation abound in the studio as to when India will declare. Steve Finn leans towards Rohit Sharma putting England in for 45 minutes to an hour before tea. Sir Alistair Cook, having been in comparable positions himself, inclines towards caution, especially in the bazball era when anything is possible. He’d want a few more runs on the board, in the understanding that England aren’t going to dig in for the draw. Fireworks in the final session, then? Probably fireworks in this one, you’d think. India have nothing to lose at this point, and every big hit’s a bonus. A 600/650 or even 700 lead is perfectly possible at this stage.

The story of the first session
India strengthened their already dominant position in the third Test as runs flowed on the fourth morning in Rajkot.
England bowled decently enough with an old ball, but chances were few and far between as the home side extended their lead up to a mammoth 440.
Two wickets did fall in the session, with Shubman Gill missing out on a century when he was run out in a mix-up with nightwatchman Kuldeep Yadav, departing for 91.
And the nightwatchman, who stayed out there for well over an hour, was finally bagged by Joe Root at first slip off the bowling of Rehan Ahmed for 27.
However, Yashasvi Jaiswal was fit to return to the middle after his back injury on day three, and extended his score up to 149* by lunch, with the dangerous Sarfaraz Khan looking in ominous touch at the other end on 22*.
And India were handed another boost with the news that Ravichandran Ashwin is back involved after missing day three due to personal reasons.
England do have a new-ball available, but are already facing the prospect of a near-impossible fourth-innings chase, and still have six wickets left to get.
Touring teams don’t win many Tests in India, with England’s victory in Hyderabad at the start of this series being only the fourth time that a visiting side have won a match in these conditions in the last decade.
And it will take the most heroic effort of England’s Bazball era if they are to escape defeat in Rajkot.
India will resume on 314-4 with a lead of 440 and five sessions still to play in the match.
For context, these are the highest ever successful chases in men’s Tests in India. And that top number is also the biggest fourth-innings score in any cause in an Indian home Test.

LUNCH: India 314-4 (Jaiswal 149, Sarfaraz 22) Overs: 82
India lead England (319 all out) by 440 runs
India are trying to land a really significant psychological blow today, knowing that the series will still be very much alive going into the fourth Test next week.
And Jaiswal booms Rehan for an absolute monster six. He put everything into that and the ball has disappeared somewhere into Rajkot. The umpires provide England with a replacement ball.
One more single comes from the over and it’s time for lunch with India having added 118 runs in the morning session.
India 307-4 (Jaiswal 142, Sarfaraz 22) Overs: 81
India lead England (319 all out) by 433 runs
The new ball is available, with lunch also rapidly approaching. England decide to stick with spin for now as Hartley has a crack before the interval.
It’s a pretty straightforward over for India, who pick up three singles.
India 304-4 (Jaiswal 140, Sarfaraz 21) Overs: 80
India lead England (319 all out) by 430 runs
The 300 comes up for India. There’s not been much pressure on them in this third innings, but it’s still been a mightily impressive showing, from Jaiswal in particular.
It feels like we’re seeing the new generation of Indian batting stars really establish themselves in the Test XI in this series.
Sarfaraz could well be one of them and he rounds off the over with a slog sweep for four.
India 299-4 (Jaiswal 139, Sarfaraz 17) Overs: 79
India lead England (319 all out) by 425 runs
Oof. Jaiswal latches on to a full toss from Root and slams him for six.
And Sarfaraz joins in on the act, showing off all that ability with a huge maximum over midwicket.
The positive news for England is that the new ball will be available in one over’s time.
The bad news is that Root just went for 15 in the over and India lead by a mammoth 425.
India 284-4 (Jaiswal 131, Sarfaraz 10) Overs: 78
India lead England (319 all out) by 410 runs
Seven runs come off Rehan’s over as Sarfaraz whips him away through midwicket for four.
There’s been a fascinating chat on the broadcast commentary (which you can follow on TNT Sports and discovery+) about the differences between Rehan and Kuldeep’s actions.
You’d hope that somebody is taking notes on the England leggie’s behalf. He’s ten years younger than the Indian spinner and has so much potential.
India 277-4 (Jaiswal 130, Sarfaraz 4) Overs: 77
India lead England (319 all out) by 403 runs
Another over for Root and one more run to the India total.
India 276-4 (Jaiswal 129, Sarfaraz 4) Overs: 76
India lead England (319 all out) by 402 runs
Five singles come off Rehan, who is being milked by this pair, who are both excellent against the turning ball.
The crowd cheer as the lead goes beyond 400. No team has ever scored that amount in a fourth innings in India, and England need something miraculous from here.
One of the big mistakes people make with Bazball is taking their interviews at face value.
England continue to make positive noises about chasing anything down in this game, but they will know that they are in a hole here. It’s all about staying positive from their point of view, not contributing to the pressure on themselves with negative mindset.
India 271-4 (Jaiswal 125, Sarfaraz 3) Overs: 75
India lead England (319 all out) by 397 runs
One more run comes off Root as Jaiswal and Sarfaraz bed in. This is the pair that will really worry England – they have shown the ability to score big and fast.
India 270-4 (Jaiswal 125, Sarfaraz 2) Overs: 74
India lead England (319 all out) by 396 runs
Five singles come off Rehan’s latest over as England fizz through spin at both ends. The new ball isn’t miles away.
India 265-4 (Jaiswal 122, Sarfaraz 0) Overs: 73
India lead England (319 all out) by 391 runs
Root did hurt his finger taking that catch, but he’s okay to bowl for now.
Jaiswal sweeps for four to get India back up and running with their fifth-wicket stand.
The lead is now more than any team has ever scored in a fourth-innings in India.
WICKET! India 258-4 (Jaiswal 115, Sarfaraz 0) Overs: 72
India lead England (319 all out) by 384 runs
Kuldeep Yadav caught by Joe Root bowled Rehan Ahmed for 27 (91b)
England finally have the nightwatchman as Rehan gets the edge and Root takes the catch at first slip, flicking the ball away moments after holding on to the chance, possibly in frustration at how long it’s taken, or maybe because it hurt his finger, it’s hard to tell.
The decision wasn’t initially given, with the umpires unsure whether it was a bump ball or not, but an umpire review shows it was totally fine and Kuldeep departs for 27.
India 257-3 (Kuldeep 27, Jaiswal 114) Overs: 71
India lead England (319 all out) by 383 runs
Another tidy over for Root and it’s one run for India.
India 256-3 (Kuldeep 27, Jaiswal 113) Overs: 70
India lead England (319 all out) by 382 runs
Rehan exceptionally young, but he’s got something, not least because he’s more controlled than you’d expect for such an inexperienced leggie.
His latest over is a maiden, his first of the innings.
India 256-3 (Kuldeep 27, Jaiswal 113) Overs: 69
India lead England (319 all out) by 382 runs
Jaiswal enjoys a let-off against Root, edging past first slip for a couple. And he rubs salt into the wounds with a lovely late cut for four to end the over.
India 250-3 (Kuldeep 27, Jaiswal 107) Overs: 68
India lead England (319 all out) by 376 runs
Just the one single off Rehan, but it means India are up to 250 and with plenty of batting still to come.
India 249-3 (Kuldeep 27, Jaiswal 106) Overs: 67
India lead England (319 all out) by 375 runs
Root bowls a maiden as England bring the field in close and try to exert a bit of pressure.
India 249-3 (Kuldeep 27, Jaiswal 106) Overs: 66
India lead England (319 all out) by 375 runs
It’s time for a bit of Rehan. India take two singles off him.
India 247-3 (Kuldeep 26, Jaiswal 105) Overs: 65
India lead England (319 all out) by 373 runs
Gill will be sitting up on the balcony wondering how he’s missed out on a century there. It was the nightwatchman’s error on the call too.
But there’s some positive news for India, as Jaiswal comes out to the middle, able to resume after tweaking his back during yesterday’s innings.
And the BCCI have also confirmed that Ashwin will be back today, meaning India have a full XI to work with.
Root’s into the attack and goes for one single.
WICKET! India 246-3 (Kuldeep 26) Overs: 64
India lead England (319 all out) by 372 runs
Shubman Gill run out by Ben Stokes and Tom Hartley for 91 (151b)
England only have one review remaining, which isn’t ideal. Hartley cracks Kuldeep on the front pad, but Stokes shakes his head. It was close to umpire’s call on impact and the stumps, but a ball-tracking review says that it would have been three reds. This is the downside of burning reviews – you miss opportunities like this.
England breathe a sigh of relief as that missed opportunity doesn’t cost them. In fact it earns them an even bigger wicket as this pair go for a quick single, change their minds, and Gill doesn’t make it back into his ground. It was a good throw from Stokes and Hartley took off the bails at the bowler’s end – quite scrappily but quickly enough to do the job.
Gill is absolutely furious and departs for 91.
India 241-2 (Gill 86, Kuldeep 26) Overs: 63
India lead England (319 all out) by 367 runs
Wood hangs his head as the umpire signals wide. A seven-ball over is not what the tiring pace man wants, but it’s the right call, his latest bouncer ballooned off the surface and went miles over Kuldeep’s head.
England opt to review off the last ball of the over as a Wood yorker has Kuldeep in trouble. But replays show it’s a questionable call to take that one upstairs – there was a massive inside edge onto the pads. England lose another review.
Six runs come off the over and it’s a fifty partnership for these two, cementing the home team’s dominance.
India 235-2 (Gill 85, Kuldeep 22) Overs: 62
India lead England (319 all out) by 361 runs
Kuldeep is looking full of confidence and the nightwatchman smashes Hartley back over his head for four more.
India 230-2 (Gill 84, Kuldeep 18) Overs: 61
India lead England (319 all out) by 356 runs
Wood comes into the attack to replace Anderson. Can either of these two England quicks recover in time for the fourth Test, which begins on Friday? It’s going to be a big ask.
England are toiling a bit, but it’s a good time to remember that this is the typical experience for visiting teams in India. It’s been a decade of complete dominance for India at home since their last series defeat on their own patch, which came back in 2012.
India 228-2 (Gill 83, Kuldeep 17) Overs: 60
India lead England (319 all out) by 354 runs
India’s attack will be far more difficult to face than this tiring England unit, but the positive news for Stokes and Co. is that it’s not a minefield even on this fourth day, which means a big chase isn’t totally out of the question.
The 350+ target is already extremely daunting though, and the final amount is going to be a lot more than that. The fact India are playing like they think England are still in with a chance in this game is a compliment to the tourists.
Three singles come from Hartley’s latest over.
India 225-2 (Gill 82, Kuldeep 15) Overs: 59
India lead England (319 all out) by 351 runs
Anderson sends down a rare bouncer that has Kuldeep in a spot of bother, catching the top edge but dropping safe.
But Gill finishes the over with a wonderful drive that races away for four, underlining India’s dominance.
India 219-2 (Gill 77, Kuldeep 14) Overs: 58
India lead England (319 all out) by 345 runs
Four more for Gill, who looks in the mood for a big one today.
Hartley puffs out his cheeks and goes again. It’s going to be a big workload for the youngster today.
India 214-2 (Gill 72, Kuldeep 14) Overs: 57
India lead England (319 all out) by 340 runs
England’s slim chance in this game involves running through India quickly today and then putting in an all-time great display with the bat.
But part one of that plan isn’t going particularly well, as Kuldeep and Gill block out another over from Anderson, knowing that the England veteran could be the big threat in this first hour.
India 213-2 (Gill 71, Kuldeep 14) Overs: 56
India lead England (319 all out) by 339 runs
Kuldeep bangs a Hartley long hop away for four more. It’s not been a particularly great start from England’s young left armer today.
India 208-2 (Gill 70, Kuldeep 10) Overs: 55
India lead England (319 all out) by 334 runs
Anderson continues and a trademark over goes for one run.
The word from Rajkot is that India may have Ravichandran Ashwin back in their number today, following his absence yesterday due to personal reasons.
The nature of why Ashwin missed play means there’s no sort of restriction for India in how they use him like there would be with an injury or something like that. He can come straight back in with bat and ball if he feels ready to do so.
India 207-2 (Gill 69, Kuldeep 10) Overs: 54
India lead England (319 all out) by 333 runs
The nightwatchman Kuldeep has had enough of patting it around and shimmies down to Hartley’s final ball of the over, launching a big six over long on.
It’s the left-hander’s first six in his Test career.
India 200-2 (Gill 68, Kuldeep 4) Overs: 53
India lead England (319 all out) by 326 runs
Here’s Anderson, hoping to get a bit of help from the slightly hazy early conditions. It’s an old ball though so he’ll have his work cut out, and India play him warily, with one single coming from the over.
This start from India suggests that the plan is to try and go really big today and make a statement ahead of the final two matches of the series.
India 199-2 (Gill 67, Kuldeep 4) Overs: 52
India lead England (319 all out) by 325 runs
Tom Hartley takes the ball for the first over of the day and he gets a couple to turn and bounce.
India milk him for three singles in a safe start to the morning session.
03:55 – The aftermath of Bazball’s worst day
One thing you can absolutely guarantee with England’s Bazball era is that when they have a bad day then there will be an awful lot of noise from their detractors.
And Saturday was England’s worst day since the start of Stokes’ tenure, meaning there has been a remarkable amount of chat coming from the more traditional voices in England cricket since yesterday’s play, as well as the expected jibes from Indian and Australian fans.
England have endured plenty of disappointing days in the subcontinent in their history, so I’m not sure you can pin it all on Bazball. But when you make a lot of noise you have to put up with that coming back on you, I suppose.
The debate about Joe Root’s dismissal and the merits of his shot has been the biggest talking point, with TNT Sports pundits Sir Alastair Cook and Steven Finn offering some of the more level-headed responses out there.
03:50 – Hello and welcome
Could this be the last day of the Test? India are in complete control and will have their sights set on a score that bats England completely out of the game, before giving the bowlers the chance to win it in the fourth innings.
As things stand England will already be facing a target that would be the highest ever successful chase by a touring team in India. But there are a lot more runs out there for India and it’s going to take something miraculous from England to rescue this match. They’ve done it once in this series so you never know.

Day Three recap in Rajkot
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s unbeaten 104 gave India a commanding 322-run lead on the third day of the third Test after an England collapse.
Jaiswal eventually had to retire injured in a blow for India, but with Rohit Sharma and Rajat Patidar the only other men to fall, it represented a damning indictment of England’s lacklustre attack.
Ben Duckett’s 133-run haul – including 21 fours and two sixes – left the tourists on a promising 207-2 at the end of day two, but the tide dramatically turned in the hosts’ favour as England slumped to 319 all out.
Jaiswal and Sharma took to the crease for the start of India’s second innings, with the latter bowled lbw by Root following a successful review.
That was about as good as it got for England, as Jaiswal marked his half century by smashing a six into the stands and progressed to a century in the 39th over.
Gill reached 50 to take India’s lead to more than 300, before Jaiswal retired hurt with an apparent back problem.
