Former Boston Celtics player Jeff Teague believes there are more trades coming from his former team.
Even during the playoffs before Jayson Tatum’s Achilles injury, it was speculated that the Boston Celtics could have to break up their roster for financial reasons.
Had the Celtics retained, this could have been a tougher decision, but their semifinals exit combined with Tatum’s injury ended up combining to make their choices easier.
The rebuild has begun with Jrue Holiday traded to the Portland Trail Blazers, which Boston landing the cheaper and younger Anfernee Simons.
The view among fans is that Boston ‘fleeced’ Portland, and this might be just one of a number of trades the Celtics consider.
Jeff Teague says the door is now open for 2024 Finals MVP Jaylen Brown to be traded, because the Boston Celtics are not good enough to win the title.
Speaking to the Club 520 podcast, Teague explained: “I think they could move on from Jaylen Brown too. Not to say he’s not a phenomenal player but you’re not going to win a championship any time soon.
“It’s over with. The injuries messed up your timeline. To move under the apron, they might as well move on from that contract.”
Teague believes there are other players he believes the Celtics will consider moving on too, with it all depending on the level of offers they receive or what they can acquire.
He said: “Or Derrick White. One of them. From a money aspect. Or Porzingis, he’s injury prone anyway. I don’t think they gonna be able to move on from Porzingis unless they group him with someone, he’s missed a lot of games.”
Joe Mazzulla will ensure the Celtics are competitive whatever their roster looks like, but they are up against it with Jayson Tatum expected to miss the whole season.
“They not going to do nothing next year, it’s over with,” Teague added.
Jeff Teague added that he does not believe Jrue Holiday will be staying with the Portland Trail Blazers, having been traded to his former team.
He predicted: “I don’t think Jrue Holiday will be there. I think they will move on from Jrue.
“I like Jrue Holiday as a player but I don’t think he want to be there. I can’t imagine he is going to stay with this group, I can’t see it.”
