In the wake of the Dallas Mavericks’ blockbuster trade sending Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, head coach Jason Kidd has publicly addressed his relationship with General Manager Nico Harrison.
Despite the controversy surrounding the midseason move, Jason Kidd emphasized that their professional rapport remains strong and focused on the franchise’s future.
“I think my relationship with Nico is at a high,” Kidd stated during an appearance on DLLS Sports.
“Understanding business is part of the game of basketball. I’ve been a part of it as a player and coach, and so understanding the vision of winning a championship is what Nico’s here to do, and I’m in full support of that.”
The trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis was met with significant backlash from fans and media alike.
Reports indicated that Kidd was informed of the trade shortly before it became public, leading to speculation about potential tension between the coach and front office.
However, Kidd’s recent comments suggest a unified approach as the Mavericks look toward their rebuild. The franchise secured the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NBA Draft, creating new possibilities that weren’t available before the controversial move.
Kidd expressed optimism about the opportunities that lie ahead, stating: “I’m excited about what the summer holds for us having the number one pick, but not just that, but hopefully there’s some free agents out there that would want to come to Dallas. We believe that we will be attractive this summer.”
The Mavericks now find themselves in a better position compared to when they initially let Doncic go to Los Angeles. They have multiple options to rebuild their roster around different core pieces.
The number one pick could be translated into generational talent Cooper Flagg, who would join an experienced roster featuring Davis, Klay Thompson, and Kyrie Irving. This combination could provide both immediate competitiveness and long-term potential.
Alternatively, Harrison could once again attempt a blockbuster gamble, with rumors suggesting the pick could be used to lure the Milwaukee Bucks in a potential Giannis Antetokounmpo trade.
This option is even better in terms of making the Mavericks a contender for next season, as it will create a roster full of veteran stars and winners.
However, as the Mavericks navigate this new chapter, the collaboration between Kidd and Harrison will be crucial in shaping the team’s trajectory and restoring its competitive edge. Either it will be with Flagg or Giannis.
