Jeff Teague picks out Derrick Rose’s best quality and says who was hardest to guard, compared to James Harden

Jeff Teague faced elite competition throughout his NBA career from 2009 to 2021. The former All-Star encountered legendary point guards during his prime years with the Atlanta Hawks.

Teague guarded basketball’s biggest names including Stephen Curry, Chris Paul, and Kyrie Irving. His extensive experience provides valuable insight into which opponents presented the greatest challenges.

Teague recently revealed his toughest matchups on a podcast appearance. James Harden is one of the top on Teague‘s list for most difficult opponents to contain.

“He [Harden] was the hardest player to ever guard in the NBA, besides Derrick Rose for me, because you couldn’t touch him. He can get to the foul line at will. He shoot that step back,” Teague explained.

Harden’s peak scoring seasons left lasting impressions on defenders. His ability to draw fouls while maintaining elite shooting made him nearly impossible to slow down.

“Man, he was incredible when he was averaging like 35, 34 points a game. There’s nothing you can really do,” Teague added.

The former Houston Rockets star’s step-back three-pointer became his signature weapon. Defenders struggled to contest his shots without committing fouls, creating an impossible dilemma.

But for Teague, Derrick Rose earned more recognition despite their different playing styles. The Chicago Bulls star’s athletic aggression created unique defensive challenges.

Rose’s combination of speed, strength, and fearlessness made him unstoppable during his MVP season. His ability to attack the rim relentlessly wore down opposing defenses.

Tom Thibodeau’s heavy minute rotations in Chicago amplified Rose’s impact. The demanding coach rarely rested his star point guard, forcing opponents to defend his energy for extended periods.

“I mean you know how Thibs played for 50 minutes and only 48 in the game, but, like he never got tired.

“He was always ready, never sent out games, and he was always in attack mode,” Teague observed.

Teague believes Rose’s career trajectory would have reached historic heights without injuries. The former MVP’s potential places him among point guard royalty in Teague’s estimation.

“To me, if he doesn’t get hurt, he’s a top five point guard of all time. What made him special, his speed, quickness, his strength and his ability to make those floaters and tough shots, and then he was fearless,” Teague explained.

Rose’s signature floater became an unstoppable weapon during his prime. His ability to finish over taller defenders while maintaining incredible athleticism separated him from his peers.
