Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler has established himself as one of the best players in the NBA over the past few seasons.
Jimmy Butler was a 30th round selection for the Chicago Bulls in the 2011 NBA Draft, and while that class featured some elite talent ahead of him including Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard and Klay Thompson, there were lots of misses too.
Butler has gone onto become a six-time NBA All Star, later playing with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Philadelphia 76ers, before joining the Miami Heat in 2019.
It’s not just basketball Jimmy Butler is elite at. He claims to have another secret talent, where he is the ‘best in the world’.
Jimmy Butler is being featured in Netflix’s brand new 10-part ‘Starting 5’ documentary, giving an inside track on a quintet of the NBA’s top stars.
The show provides an insight into the personal lives of the game’s top athletes, where Butler claims to be the world’s best domino player.
He explains: “Basketball, I’m okay at it, but that’s not what I’m best at. I’m the greatest domino player in the world.
“I can only go by what I know and what I’ve seen. I first learned to play dominoes growing up, that’s how my Dad taught me how to count, learn probability and learn how to kick ass at an early age.”
Butler goes on to claim the dominoes has been an essential part of his life journey.
“People don’t view dominoes as part of training, I do. I see the game [of basketball] differently because the game is slowed down a little bit. [Dominoes teaches] you that whatever hand you’re dealt, everything is not going to go your way.
“Are you just going to throw your dominoes in? No. You know how to manipulate the game in so many different types of ways but you’ve still got to figure it out and find a way to win.”
Butler’s philosophy underlines his steely determination to rise to the top and become a NBA All Star.
He was not a high draft pick, narrowly avoiding dropping into round two, yet he made the best of the hand he was dealt, and has become one of the best in the game.
‘Jimmy Buckets’ has more to offer, even at the age of 35, and there is speculation he could be traded away by the Miami Heat in the next blockbuster move, for another fresh start.
Wherever he falls, Butler will make the most of it.
