The Miami Heat have suspended Jimmy Butler for two games ahead of their upcoming road trip after Butler was late for a team flight.
The Jimmy Butler trade saga is getting out of hand for the Miami Heat. After suspending Butler for seven games after his initial public trade request, the sides reconciled as Butler returned to the team. The Heat have been aggressively looking for trade partners in this span but nothing has been finalized just yet.
Jimmy Butler was late to the Heat’s flight to Milwaukee to begin a two-game road trip. He was expected to join the team for the matchup against the Milwaukee Bucks. This led to another suspension which will rule him out of the road trip. The second matchup is against the Brooklyn Nets. Now, he will likely be watching from home as efforts to trade him intensify.
The Miami Heat released an official statement to lay out the reasoning behind their decision to suspend Jimmy Butler.
“We have suspended Jimmy Butler for two games for a continued pattern of disregard for team rules, insubordinate conduct, and conduct detrimental to the team, including missing today’s team flight to Milwaukee.”
Jimmy Butler will lose over $3 million in earnings this season due to suspensions by the Heat. They don’t want to pay a player who isn’t fully committed to the cause. Heat Culture is well-known and it explains why they are suspending Butler at every rule-breach.
The NBPA was investigating Butler’s first seven-game suspension earlier this month. However, the Heat shared a 10-page document laying out why Butler was suspended. Their new statement is directly laying out why Butler is being suspended, so the NBPA will struggle to get this overturned either.
None of this will end until Jimmy Butler is off the Miami Heat. The player wants to leave and the team wants him gone. But an exit hasn’t been easy to negotiate due to Butler’s sunken trade value right now.
The Phoenix Suns have been the most aggressive in pursuing Jimmy Butler. Unfortunately, they don’t have the assets to interest the Heat in the deal.
The franchise made a supplemental trade this week by acquiring three first-round picks from the Utah Jazz. They sent their 2031 first-round pick to make it happen. While three is better than one, the pick Phoenix sent out is considered the most valuable draft asset in the NBA. The Suns do not control a single one of their draft picks from now to 2031.
The Suns need to find a third team to accept Bradley Beal to facilitate a Jimmy Butler acquisition. While Beal is still a great player, his contract and no-trade clause make him a negative asset. The Suns likely acquired those picks to help in moving Beal to a third team and acquiring Jimmy Butler.
No other teams have been as heavily interested in Butler, so he’s bound to come to Phoenix. But if they fail to produce an acceptable offer, this saga could drag out to the summer.
Rumors of a Jimmy Butler trade being close to finalized ran rampant after the Suns acquired the three draft picks. They were heightened when multiple sources reported that the Milwaukee Bucks are open to accepting Bradley Beal in a larger Butler trade.
This spread like wildfire through the NBA community, with reputed voices confirming the interest and saying Beal would waive his no-trade clause for the Bucks. However, it was a short-lived 24 hours of rumors as Chris Haynes reported that these rumors are ‘non-existent.’
“Contrary to popular belief, I was just informed that the Milwaukee Bucks have not inquired about Phoenix Suns star Bradley Beal. In fact, I was told that a connection between the parties was non-existent. If Phoenix is able to acquire Jimmy Butler, it won’t be coming via the Milwaukee Bucks taking on the star guard (Beal).”
We are back to square one with potential ways of getting Jimmy Butler to the Suns. It seems other teams are wary of Butler’s desire to join the Suns and aren’t getting involved. While certain teams are willing to play the role of facilitators who can move off undesirable contracts in a larger trade, no team has emerged as a clear Beal destination.
Until we come closer to a resolution on where Beal ends up, the Heat can’t close the book on the messy Jimmy Butler trade saga.
