JJ Redick names one ‘mental’ hurdle which is holding back Bronny James since he was 8 years old

Bronny James is on the verge of taking the next step in his NBA career.

LeBron James has been the face of the league for the majority of his 22-year stint in the NBA. Evidently, he has been under the spotlight throughout his career.

It has also led to the James family receiving media attention, especially his eldest son, Bronny James.

Since James Jr. announced his decision to play in the NBA, the lights have only become brighter for the 20-year-old. It’s hard to deny its impact on James’ underwhelming numbers in his rookie season.

Getting drafted to a team of Los Angeles Lakers‘ popularity certainly didn’t allow Bronny to make mistakes.

Despite being a second-round pick, the media has put huge expectations on the young guard’s shoulders. Although James Jr.’s popularity is good for business, he is yet to shine on the court.

Even with obvious doubts about Bronny’s long-term future in the NBA, head coach JJ Redick is confident in the rookie guard.

“He’s very coachable. I’ve told him this, he has to get to a point where it’s okay to fail. I think he has a real reservation of failing,” Redick said.

“I think a lot of that is, he’s had a camera on him since he was eight years old. I can’t imagine Knox and Kai having cameras at their Rec League games,” Redick added.

It’s understandable that Bronny has developed this reservation. After all, he is the eldest son of one of the greatest basketball players of all time.

Naturally, fans expect him to emulate his father’s talent in some capacity during his NBA career.

As a coach, it’s always easy to manage the talented veterans on the team. However, bringing out the best in rookies and helping them overcome their fears truly makes an amazing head coach.

Redick pointed out the ‘mental’ hurdle that Bronny needs to overcome to truly tap into his full potential.

“He has had attention on him, I’m cognizant of that and I think once he develops that, he’s going to take off. He will do anything we ask him to do, he has done everything we have asked him to do,” he continued.

“It’s just really part of [what] player development is. Not just the physical skills and the physical development, it is the mental development as well,” the Lakers coach concluded.

For what it’s worth, Redick is seemingly spot on with his take. Bronny looks a lot more confident in his skills when he is playing in the G League.

Sure, the competition is nowhere near the NBA, but the difference between his confidence is awfully clear.
