Los Angeles Lakers fans still treat former head coach Darvin Ham with disdain.
The 2024 NBA Cup is over and the Milwaukee Bucks have become the new champions after defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder.
For a team that started the season with an extremely poor record, the Bucks continue to turn their season around.
Speaking of the Bucks, assistant coach Darvin Ham made headlines for winning the second NBA Cup of his coaching career.
After serving as an assistant coach for multiple NBA franchises over 11 years, Ham finally got his head coaching breakout with the Los Angeles Lakers.
However, Ham’s stint with the Lakers lasted just two years and the fanbase hated the former NBA champion.
The biggest highlights of Ham’s coaching run with the Purple and Gold were leading the team to the inaugural NBA Cup and a Western Conference Finals run.
The Lakers had a perfect 7-0 run under Ham’s coaching in the competition. Well, as fate would have it, the Bucks repeated the same record this season.
Ham is turning out to be a lucky charm for teams in the NBA Cup. As for the Laker Nation, they are still talking about their former head coach.
The bright lights of LA are not easy to fend off. After all, the fanbase expects its team to win an NBA Championship every year.
Considering Ham was unable to achieve that during his short run with the team, the Laker Nation continues to find ways to take a shot at him whenever possible.
LA Lakers fans had all sorts of things to say about Ham following the 2024 NBA Cup win, albeit as an assistant coach.
One fan sarcastically wrote: “Darvin Ham’s undefeated record in the NBA Cup is a coach’s dream come true.”
Another added: “Guess he’s now the undisputed king of… the NBA Cup?”
“I’ve never seen an assistant coach get this much media attention,” a fan said.
This was echoed by another post: “Before Ham assistant coaches didn’t get credit for wins.”
The current Lakers head coach caught a stray: “Better than ‘JJ Reddit’ that’s for sure.”
Another wrote: “He can win in the cup, but outside of the cup doesn’t win! The Lakers know this.”
“They gotta put Darvin Ham in the commercials for the NBA Cup next year,” one fan added.
All things considered, it felt like the fanbase did its best to downplay Ham’s achievement.
On the other hand, it is indeed rare to see an assistant coach receiving so much recognition for an accolade instead of the head coach, and amid the Lakers up and down season, the mixed feelings are understandable.
