The LA Lakers secured a much-needed win to defeat the Portland Trail Blazers, and move to 13-11.
JJ Redick’s LA Lakers were expected to beat the Portland Trail Blazers – but amid their terrible run of form, nothing could be taken for guaranteed.
LeBron James missed his first game of the season due to injury, ending his chances of playing in all 82 regular season games.
The Lakers were able to win the game without him, victorious 107-98.
Anthony Davis has had a strange season, beginning the campaign looking like a MVP candidate.
But in recent games he has had a drop in form, with Lakers legend James Worthy calling him out, suggesting ‘something is not clicking mentally’ with him.
One NBA pundit even called for the Lakers to blow up their roster by trading Davis – even though this appears an unlikely course of action.
Davis was in good form against Portland, going 30-11-1. Most impressively he had two steals and five blocks, showing a dominant performance on defense.
Former Lakers star Robert Horry praised Davis’ defense, crediting him for making life hard for the Trail Blazers.
He told the Lakers post-game broadcast: “He made people scared, made people afraid of going to the plate, and as a big that’s half the battle.
“If you can get guys maybe who are coming at you and they’re gonna try to move around the perimeter and take bad shots, that’s perfect.
“I think what he does on defense is incredible.”
Anthony Davis’ next steps are to show more consistency game to game, and get back to the form he displayed when he started the season.
Horry had more praised for Davis, commenting: “He does everything on the floor the right way and that’s what I love about him. He never goes out of his way, that makes me mad sometimes, but he plays the game the right way.”
But he added: “He has to be in attack mode.”
For the season, Davis is averaging a remarkable 27.5 points per game. But his numbers have fluctuated wildly over the past few games.
Opponent | Points | |
Anthony Davis | Portland | 30 |
Anthony Davis | Atlanta* | 38 |
Anthony Davis | Miami | 8 |
Anthony Davis | Minnesota | 12 |
Anthony Davis | Utah | 30 |
When Davis is hitting big numbers, the Lakers look good. But in the games he has been off, the whole team has sunk.
It’s right that his defensive work was praised too. This was a big issue for the whole team in the blowout loss to Miami, and Davis is leading by example.
