LA Lakers waive Quincy Olivari, set to sign Trey Jemison

The LA Lakers are making a move to adjust their roster, and one aspect may come as a disappointment.

One of the stars of the LA Lakers pre-season was rookie Quincy Olivari, whose talent and captivating enthusiasm added the good vibes around the team.

Olivari has been playing for the South Bay Lakers in the G League, recently putting up a 22-5-3 performance.

He was signed to a two-way contract, but had played only two NBA games totaling 10 minutes, one of which was a two minute showing against the Spurs just earlier this week.

Yet it appears Olivari’s Lakers career is at an end, with Shams Charania reporting he is being waived by the team to make way for an acquisition.

The LA Lakers decision to waive Olivari is to make space for a free agent acquisition, according to a report.

The Lakers will sign Trey Jemison to the spot vacated by Olivari on the roster.

Trey Jemison, 25, entered the NBA in 2023 after going undrafted and was picked up for the Suns for summer league, before being waived and signed to the Pelicans, and playing for their G League affiliate.

Jemison got his first taste of NBA action with the Washington Wizards last January on a short-term deal, before signing with the Memphis Grizzlies.

He played 23 games for the Grizzlies including 14 as a starter, averaging 7.4 points per game, including dropping 24 points on his former team the Wizards.

Jemison also had a 17 point game against Detroit, and two 14 point games against the Spurs and the Hornets.

This season he signed with the New Orleans Pelicans, playing 16 games in total, with his highest output a 8-point game, but he was waived by the team in early January, to make way for them to sign forward Keion Brooks.

Now the Lakers are set to try out the 6ft 10″ center as extra depth for a position they need – and have to hope Olivari is worth cutting him for.

Olivari should have little trouble finding another team as a free agent. Earlier this year he was praised by D’Angelo Russell as too good for the G League, confident he belongs in the NBA.
