Luka Doncic declares his first big step after signing a contract extension with the LA Lakers

The much-awaited Luka Doncic extension is now official as the Slovenian has agreed to a three-year $165 million deal.

The Purple and Gold have had a big offseason with three additions to their roster, but there has been a lot of talk circulating about Luka Doncic‘s contract extension.

Doncic was traded to the LA Lakers in a blockbuster trade that saw Anthony Davis move to the Dallas Mavericks.

He impressed with his performances during the regular season, but the playoffs showed that Doncic lacked conditioning to play an entire NBA campaign.

The Slovenian has worked hard on himself throughout the offseason staying in LA and even doing things he had never done earlier in his career.

Doncic was due for an extension, and while there were doubts initially if he would sign immediately, the player put pen to paper and dispelled the doubts of Laker nation.

The 26-year-old was drafted in 2018 by the Mavericks, but he was a pro even before that in Europe.

Doncic has risen to global superstardom since coming into the NBA.

He decided to take a major step and give it back to the community by making a major donation after signing his $165 million extension.

The Lakers player tweeted: “Today I’m also committing $5 million to help 77 young athletes around the world chase their dreams, just like I did. Basketball gave me everything, and I’m lucky to be able to give back and help the next generation.”

It has been only six months since Doncic’s move to the Lakers, and although it was a tough one for him to take initially, the player has loved being part of the franchise so far.

He thanked the Buss family for their contributions to the team and also welcomed new owner Mark Walters when it was announced that he would take over the majority stakes in the team.

Doncic also played a key role in recruiting Marcus Smart to the team by talking to him personally before his move.

His contract has a player option in the final year, and this enables him to sign a massive five-year, $417 million extension.

LeBron James has been the face of the Lakers since he moved to LA in 2018, but he does not have a lot of years left in him.

The team was sure about making Doncic the next man of the team, and with his extension, it seems evident that the transition to the Luka era has now started.
