Magic Johnson gives exciting verdict on Los Angeles Lakers rookie Bronny James ahead of debut NBA season

Magic Johnson shared his thoughts on Bronny James after the Los Angeles Lakers’ final preseason game against the Golden State Warriors.

James struggled to make much of an impact in the Lakers’ five previous games and had come under some criticism.

But he seemingly turned a corner against the Warriors on Friday night with 17 points, four rebounds and an assist in 35 minutes.

The Lakers’ opposition were without Steph Curry but the likes of Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins and Jonathan Kuminga all played a significant amount of time.

Magic Johnson shared his thoughts on Bronny James’ performance against the Warriors on Saturday.

“Laker Nation, I have to tell you Bronny James is going to be a really good basketball player,” he said on X.

“Last night, he showed he has a few things you simply can’t teach – high basketball IQ, athleticism, and a competitive spirit that makes him a tenacious defender!

“I believe after a lot of hard work this season, he’ll definitely be in the Lakers’ rotation and playing heavy minutes.”

It remains to be seen whether James will be a part of JJ Redick’s rotation in the regular season but he certainly has a better chance now than a few days ago.

In all of the buzz around Bronny and LeBron James becoming the first father-son duo to play in the same NBA game, it has been somewhat lost that the former was a second-round pick.

Those selected in the second round often struggle to develop into NBA-level players throughout their entire career, let alone in their debut season.

As such, Bronny should not be judged on his play over the next 12 months, but instead on what he can become in three to four years.

He projects to be a quality defender, especially if he puts on some more muscle, and he could really benefit from a consistent three-point shot.
