Meet the Premier League superstars who are still firmly in the summer wilderness

With under a fortnight until the new Premier League campaign gets underway, all of England’s elite are putting together their final summer preparations.

Watching defending champions Liverpool break a string of financial records this summer following the arrivals of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and Milos Kerkez, a number of Premier League clubs have looked to complete a real squad overhaul.

However, while plenty of top-flight clubs might have broken the bank so far this summer, a number of big-name stars are still waiting for the opportunity to kickstart their careers.

Although Marcus Rashford might have completed a famous loan switch to Barcelona last month as he completed another messy divorce from Manchester United, a number of Premier League superstars find themselves firmly in the wilderness.

Alejandro Garnacho – Manchester United

Already watching Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo complete their own respective big-money moves to Old Trafford this summer, it is no secret that Ruben Amorim has had a complete squad overhaul on his mind.

However, while Rasmus Hojlund might have reportedly made it clear that he has no intentions of being pushed out of the Manchester United exit this summer, the former Sporting Lisbon boss is desperate to get another one of his attacking stars out the doors.

Reportedly having yet another public falling out with Amorim at the close of the 2024/25 campaign, it appears that Alejandro Garnacho has burnt plenty of bridges in the red half of Manchester.

Not part of United’s pre-season tour of the United States and left at home to train by himself, it appears almost certain that the Argentinian international will be on his way out of Old Trafford over the coming weeks.

Despite eventually staying put at the end of the January transfer window, Amorim has no intention of rebuilding a relationship with the 21-year-old and Garancho himself is desperate to complete a potential move to Chelsea this summer.

Jack Grealish – Manchester City

Arriving at the Etihad back in the summer of 2021 following what was a record-breaking £100million move from Aston Villa, Jack Grealish appeared to have the world at his feet.

However, despite winning three Premier League titles in the blue half of Manchester and being part of City’s iconic Champions League success two years ago, the England international has largely flattered to deceive.

Despite taking Sergio Aguero’s number 10 shirt and earning a reported £300,000-per-week, Grealish has registered just 12 Premier League strikes during his four-year stint under Pep Guardiola’s guidance.

Only featuring for just one-minute over any of City’s final five Premier League appearances last season, the 29-year-old was also completely omitted from Guardiola’s Club World Cup squad this summer.

With it reportedly made abundantly clear to the former Aston Villa skipper that he is not part of Guardiola’s plans this season, he has also been informed that finding a new club is best for all parties.

With his career at a real crossroads, it has been previously suggested that Italian champions Napoli are weighing up the idea of handing Grealish a lifeline outside of the Premier League.

Darwin Nunez – Liverpool

Embarking on what has been an astonishing summer transfer window and shattering a string of financial records, Liverpool have certainly made quite the statement before they even get the 2025/26 campaign underway.

Still desperately trying to complete what would be a famous deal for Newcastle marksman Alexander Isak, Arne Slot’s men could line-up with a completely new attack when they get the defence of their crown underway.

Already watching Luis Diaz complete a permanent switch to German giants Bayern Munich this week, it looks like Darwin Nunez is the next big-name star on their way out of Anfield.

While it might have appeared that Nunez was set to complete a permanent switch to Napoli last month, discussions between the two clubs quickly collapsed and Antonio Conte’s side publicly walked away from any kind of deal.

Although it might have been suggested this summer that the 26-year-old is completely focused on staying in Europe, options have been hard to come by and a potential bank-breaking move to the Middle East could be his most viable solution.
