NBA executive expects De’Aaron Fox to be traded away from San Antonio Spurs on one condition

De’Aaron Fox’s future with the San Antonio Spurs is at risk if one situation ends up occurring next season.

The San Antonio Spurs are set up brilliantly for the future. After landing Victor Wembanyama a few years ago, the Spurs have brought in some great young talent.

Last year, the Spurs picked Stephon Castle with the #4 overall pick. Much like Victor Wembanyama, Castle went on to win Rookie of the Year.

Dylan Harper became the Spurs’ third straight top-5 pick this year, going #2 overall. It’s a good omen for them, given how much Harper admired the Spurs growing up.

Harper showed his skills at the NBA Summer League. It’s clear they have a strong talent, and another player to add to their guard depth.

But where does that leave De’Aaron Fox going forward? Well, one anonymous NBA executive believes that the Spurs might trade him if something happens.

Several NBA executives took part in an anonymous poll with ESPN. When discussing the San Antonio Spurs, one Western Conference scout gave a warning to De’Aaron Fox.

He compared Dylan Harper to Manu Ginobili. While his three-point shooting is not at the level it should be, if he is able to improve his shot, then the Spurs might consider trading Fox.

“[Harper] has some [Manu] Ginobili to his offensive game. If the 3-point shot ever becomes a true weapon [for him], he makes Fox expendable and gives San Antonio a nice trade asset.”

Dylan Harper is a solid point guard, but his three-point shooting is definitely something that can be improved upon.

But to be clear, De’Aaron Fox isn’t a sharp shooter by any stretch of the imagination. Last season, he shot just 31% from beyond the arc.

The San Antonio Spurs have three starting-level combo guards. De’Aaron Fox, Dylan Harper, and Stephon Castle are all decent combo guards who can play both point and shooting guard.

This creates a selection headache for Mitch Johnson. Regardless of what decision he makes, the Spurs will be benching a starting-quality player.

As such, they must decide whether they want to compete next season with Fox or try and develop chemistry in their long-term backcourt with Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper.

Gilbert Arenas believes the Spurs should trade Fox, as their young players are showing great promise, and it would be a waste to bench one of them for a veteran point guard like Fox.

Whatever the case may be, this is the best kind of problem for any NBA team can have.
