The Dallas Mavericks difficult season continued with a 115-113 defeat to Utah Jazz.
In the Eastern Conference, five wins is enough currently for the fourth seed. Not in the Western Conference, where the now 5-7 Dallas Mavericks are down in 12th position.
The Mavs blew the chance to move to six wins, losing to a Utah Jazz side that had only two wins heading into the game.
After losing so narrowly in Golden State on Klay Thompson’s return, it was a surprise to see Dallas then slip to defeat to the Jazz.
There is no doubting the talent in the Dallas Mavericks team, with Thompson, Kyrie Irving, and Luka Doncic the stars.
Luka Doncic scored a team-high 37 points against the Jazz, also providing 7 rebounds and 9 assists.
It was the second-highest score Doncic has put up this season, just behind the 40 he scored against the Suns last month, also in a defeat.
Doncic’s scoring was offset by his statue-like defense for the Jazz’s game winner, allowing John Collins to move in and net a decisive dunk with six seconds remaining, the last of his 28 points.

The play re-ignited the debate over Luka Doncic’s defense, with the superstar losing concentration at a critical moment.
Fans on social media made their feelings clear over Doncic’s defensive lapse.
One wrote: “Doncic needs to get serious with his play,” with a second adding: “Luka Doncic is 95% offense 5% defense.”
Another added: “Luka Doncic is James Harden. Same ball hogs and horrible at defense.”
And a fourth wrote: “As great as Luka Doncic is, until he can’t play some type of defense… he won’t be in that top tier to me. Yes his offense is insane but damn he just gave up a LAYUP to lose the game.”
“Watching Luka Doncic play defense should be considered torture,” another fan moaned.
Others added: “Luka Doncic doesn’t even pretend to play defense,” and “Luka Doncic is literally a cone in defense wtf.”
At such a decisive moment of the game, Doncic’s error was crucial, and the Mavericks are in a poor position now in a very competitive conference.
The Mavs face the 6-6 San Antonio Spurs next on Saturday.
