Since the start of the 2024-2025 NBA season, Philadelphia 76ers center has been at the center of controversy for a variety of reasons.
Embiid started a firestorm by stating he is done playing back-to-back games for the rest of his career. He and general manager Darryl Morrey were for the concept of load management.
Embiid’s controversy didn’t stop there. On Tuesday, the NBA has announced that Embiid has been suspended for his push on Philadelphia Inquiry reporter Marcus Haynes. Haynes wrote a controversial article of Embiid’s consistent injury concerns while also talking about his son and his late brother.
The article caused an altercation between Embiid and Haynes in the team tunnel. Embiid’s push forced security to step up. The 76ers understand Embiid’s reasoning for being upset, but disapprove of the actions took.
The situation with Embiid to be suspended causes the 76ers to suffer another black eye this season. Fans around the league were more than willing to poke fun at Embiid for being suspended before even playing a game this season.
Here are some reactions from fans who poked fun at Embiid:
“Joel Embiid got suspended before playing a single game this season,” one said.
“Joel Embiid being forced to sit out games? That’ll teach him,” another said.
One fan took a more constructive approach, “If the NBA really wanted to send a message it would make Embiid play three games not sit them out.”
Another fan took a brutal reaction to his success, “Embiid punched a reporter before he punched his ticket to a ECF (Eastern Conference Finals).”
Embiid hasn’t made his season debut due a knee injury, not from load management.
And so another fan pointed that the suspension only helps him: “This is great for getting Embiid more rest highkey. Common Sixers W”
Several fans, however, have already established their perspective of the player.
There are some fans who were quick to come to the defense of Embiid after the controversial article by Haynes. They feel the need to add Embiid’s personal life to an article of Embiid’s injuries, especially mentioning the loss of his brother.
Here are the fans that came into the defense of Embiid: “If Embiid is suspended then the reporter should be fired ASAP,” one said.
“I speak for everyone when I say that we stand with Embiid on this one,” another said.
One fan called out the NBA for an apparent lack of standards, “Embiid gets suspended for pushing a _____ “reporter” that badly about his deceased brother, but you guys allow Miles Bridges and Kevin Porter Jr in the league??? @NBA.”
Several fans were okay with the measure that Embiid took on Haynes. They are hoping that action is taken against Haynes for invoking Embiid to cause the altercation.
It hasn’t been an easy start for the Philadelphia 76ers (1-5) as they have one of the worst starts in the league.
The three opponents that the 76ers will face are at the Los Angeles Clippers (3-4) on Wednesday, the Los Angeles Lakers (4-3) on the road Friday and then back home versus the Charlotte Hornets (2-5) on Sunday. It was unknown if Embiid was going to make his season-debut around this time, but he will miss the games without pay.
